Shannen Doherty’s Loved Ones Share Heartbreaking Messages a Year After Her Death: ‘I Still Carry You With Me’

It’s been one year since the untimely passing of Beverly Hills, 90210 star, Shannen Doherty, and her close friends and co-stars have shared sweet tributes in honor of her. Doherty, who battled breast cancer for nearly a decade, died of the disease on July 13, 2024.

The actress first shared her diagnosis in March 2015 and later revealed she went into remission in 2017. However, by 2019, the cancer returned as metastatic stage 4, which she shared in 2020 and by 2023 it had spread to her brain.

Doherty was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing. On the one-year anniversary of her death, her friends and family all publicly shared their love for the star in moving tributes.

The fellow 90210 star, Tori Spelling, wrote a long message for her friend on the anniversary of her death, explaining how grief is strange path.

It’s been a year…” Spelling wrote. “You and I already told the beginning of our story. The evolution of our story. Now I’m living the after. The part where I carry everything you taught me.”

Spelling went on to share how Doherty impacted her and how she inspired her to embrace life.

“You always told me to stop apologizing for myself,” Spelling shared. “To stop playing small. To stop trying to be palatable when I was born to be powerful. You taught me to turn my power on and let it shine…I’ve honored you by telling the truth louder.”

The actress ended her message with a sweet note specifically to her friend, writing, “I love you forever Shan xo 🖤 stay wild. stay rebellious. your power is your cause.”

Another 90210 co-star, Ian Ziering, opened up about this past year without Doherty, explaining how her death “hit me like a freight train.”

Every time I saw her during those years, she was still Shan—fierce, funny, full of life. That’s why her passing hit me like a freight train. I was shocked. I truly believed she was going to pull off one more miracle.”

He also addressed not sharing on social media when Doherty first passed. “When she died a year ago, I didn’t post anything. And yes, some people criticized that. To them I say: grief isn’t a performance. It’s personal. Let people grieve how they grieve.”

Ziering dove into their time together on the 90210 set, sharing that he and Doherty didn’t always get along in the beginning, as their strong personalities often clashed. But as they grew up, they realized how strong their bond was.

“So, my dear Shannen—I think of you often,” he wrote. “Your grit. Your fire. Your kind heart that so few really got to see. I still carry all of it with me. Rest easy, Shan.”

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar, shared a sweet montage of their photos together. She simply captioned the post with a broken heart emoji. The song behind the post was “See You Again,” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, making the video that much more emotional.

Gellar and Doherty had a 30 year long friendship, having met while both starring on The WB—Gellar on Buffy and Doherty on Charmed.

There were also posts from Charmed co-stars Holly Marie Combs, as well as Rose McGowan. Combs and McGowan both shared multiple videos and photos of the late actress to their stories, with Combs using the hashtag #ShandoSunday.
