Remembering George Wendt: How Norm Peterson Impacted the Lives of Millions Through His Unforgettable One-Liners
It’s a difficult time for ‘Cheers’ fans as the beloved Norm Peterson, portrayed by George Wendt, has died at age 76.
For 11 years, fans watched George Wendt saunter onto the screen and into Cheers bar as his friends and its patrons shouted out “Norm!” to which he always responded with a sarcastic one-liner that had everyone belly laughing for days. From 1982 until 1993, the actor stole the show as the beer-obsessed Norm Peterson who spent more time in his specified bar stool than he did at his accounting job or with his unseen wife, Vera.
Prior to his time on Cheers, Wendt—who passed away on May 20, 2025, at the age of 76—had a few minor roles, appearing in single episodes of Hart to Hart (1981), Taxi (1981) and M*A*S*H (1982). As Norm, Wendt took the role everywhere, even appearing as the character on series including St. Elsewhere (1985), Wings (1990) and The Simpsons (1994).
Sadly, the world lost the man behind the iconic character and is mourning the loss of such a light. The actor left behind his wife, Bernadette Birkett, and three children: Joe, Daniel and Hilary. As we remember Wendt and his unforgettable roles, his best-known quotes as Norm replay in our minds. Recall some of Norm’s best lines and moments from Cheers as we grieve the legend.
1. “Boy meets beer. Boy drinks beer. Boy meets another beer. In this performance, the role of the boy will be played by Norm Peterson.” — Norm Peterson (Season 11, Episode 3)

By the 11th and final season, it was no secret that Norm enjoyed the occasional beer, or the three-times-a-day beer. But even after more than 200 episodes, a line about how much Norm enjoyed his brew had everyone cackling.
2. “Terrorists, Sam. They’ve taken over my stomach. They’re demanding beer.” (Season 3, Episode 14)
Norm always knew how to get a laugh out of anyone around him and from anyone watching from the comfort of their own homes. When Sam asked Norm, “What’s new?” he had this hilarious response about being forced to drink beer.
3. “It’s a dog eat dog world out there, Sammy, and I’m wearing MilkBone underwear.” (Season 4, Episode 18)
Easily one of the most memorable quotes from Norm is when he discovers the world is not fair. After being considered for a promotion at work, Norm realizes his competitor is having an affair with their boss’ wife, a tidbit of information that might help him get the job.
4. “Well, I’m in a gambling mood, Sammy. I’ll take a glass of whatever comes out of that tap.” (Season 3, Episode 21)

There’s hardly an episode of Cheers where Norm doesn’t have a beer mug in his hand, which is what makes this quote such a funny one.
5. “Women. You can’t live with ‘em. Pass the beer nuts.” (Season 8, Episode 3)
Although it seemed like Norm would be quoting the well-known adage of “Women. Can’t live with them, can’t live without them,” he put an even funnier twist on it. It’s obvious Norm and his wife, Vera, aren’t the closest of spouses, so his stance on women isn’t a surprise. In typical Norm fashion, he finished the quote with the hilarious addition of “pass the beer nuts.”
