How Team USA’s ‘Miracle on Ice’ Victory Changed Hockey History—The True Story Revealed
Discover how a team of college kids pulled off one of the greatest upsets in sports history
With the 2026 Winter Olympics just around the corner, now is the perfect time to look back on the Olympic moments that have made history over the years—but few hold a candle to the 1980 “Miracle on Ice,” where Team USA’s men’s hockey team of underdog college kids beat the highly trained Soviet team in Lake Placid, New York. In the midst of the Cold War, the odds were against the young team of Americans, but what took place during the semifinal game will go down in history. Just last week, Miracle: The Boys of ‘80 was released on Netflix, and the documentary film told the true and inspiring story of Team USA’s big win. If you haven’t yet watched the doc or haven’t really heard this story, you might be wondering how this crew of kids managed to accomplish such a major feat. Here, we break down the true events behind that historic moment on the ice.
‘Miracle on Ice’ remains a historic moment in USA hockey history
In 1980, athletes from all over the world gathered in the cozy town of Lake Placid, New York, for the Winter Olympics. Among these participants was the US men’s hockey team. While in this year’s games, the most accomplished hockey players in the NHL are able to represent their country in the Olympics, back in 1981, Olympic rules made it so that no participant in the Games could be a professional athlete. That being said, Team USA largely consisted of college athletes and amateurs. When it came to the Soviet team, however, a loophole put their players on an entirely different level.
As explained by Netflix’s Tudum, the Soviet Union hockey players, though classified as amateurs, all were employed by the government “in name only,” and in reality, dedicated all of their time to training at a level that rivaled the professionals. Meanwhile, Team USA was made up of kids in their twenties—some of whom played for rival colleges—which only complicated their team dynamic and ability on the ice. However, when Herb Brooks stepped in, things took a turn. Brooks was the former coach at the University of Minnesota, and his unorthodox approach to victory was unforgettable. Intense training in the months leading up to the games put his players to the test, and in the end, it worked out better than anyone could have anticipated.
Team USA beats the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics

In the days prior to Team USA’s victory, things didn’t look great and the chances of a victory against the Soviets were hard to imagine. Three days before the Olympics, Team USA lost 10-3 in an exhibition game at Madison Square Garden against their highly skilled opponents—but on February 22, things took a turn, and the mismatched team of mostly college players proved that their months of training weren’t for nothing when they beat the Soviet team 4-3. Two days later, the team took home the gold when they beat Finland.
