It’s a Wonderful Life is a beloved Christmas classic that continues to enchant viewers of all ages nearly 80 years after its release. The 1946 Frank Capra film, which stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a hardworking everyman contemplating suicide on Christmas Eve, only to be visited by his guardian angel, who proves his profound impact on his community by showing what the world would be like if he’d never existed, brilliantly blends the existential and the heartfelt, making for a deeply poignant viewing experience.

Surprisingly, although the film was nominated for five Academy Awards, it wasn’t initially a hit; however, it developed a following over the years. When its initial copyright expired in 1974, it became a staple of seasonal TV programming and ultimately earned its status as one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time.

1. A sweet treat

In this behind-the-scenes shot, director Frank Capra and star Jimmy Stewart surprise Lionel Barrymore, who plays the villainous businessman Mr. Potter, with a cake as he celebrates his 68th birthday. Barrymore is a Christmas icon, as he was also known for playing Ebenezer Scrooge in radio broadcasts of A Christmas Carol, and as a member of the famous Barrymore acting family, the performer, who died in 1954, was Drew Barrymore’s great-uncle.
2. Dynamic duo

Capra and Stewart are all smiles in this photo from the set. Before It’s a Wonderful Life, the director and star worked together on two other acclaimed films, You Can't Take It With You (1938) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). The director and star made a good team, and over 40 years after It’s a Wonderful Life was released, Stewart said that out of the 80 films he made, it was his all-time favorite.
3. In between scenes

In this image from the set, Stewart listens to Capra’s directions between takes. In the foreground, the logo for the film’s distributor, RKO, can be seen on a stage light. Interestingly, the studio originally wanted Cary Grant, an actor with a decidedly different presence from Stewart, to star in It’s a Wonderful Life.
4. Let’s dance

Here, Donna Reed (wearing an outfit that still looks stylish today) and James Stewart rehearse for a dance scene in the film. While the two actors look pretty chummy here, Reed’s daughter, Mary Anne Owen, later revealed that there was tension between them, as Stewart blamed her for the film’s poor box office performance since she wasn’t as well known as him at the time.
5. From the screen to the radio

From 1939 to 1952, the radio anthology series The Screen Guild Theater broadcast adaptations of contemporary films, including It’s a Wonderful Life. Here, Stewart and Reed study their lines for the radio show alongside Victor Moore, who wasn’t in the film, but voiced George's guardian angel in this version.
6. Reed in a robe

In this candid, Capra and Reed chat during a break in filming, as Stewart looks on. Reed is wearing Mary’s Bedford Falls High School robe, which means they’re likely in the process of filming the sweet flashback scene wherein a young George tells Mary he’d like to lasso the moon for her.
7. Having a laugh

Capra and Stewart’s easygoing rapport comes through in this photo from the set of It’s a Wonderful Life. The lanky star (who stood 6-foot-3) appears to be quite entertained by whatever the director is telling him. In an interview, Capra described how much the film meant to him, saying, “I think it was probably the strongest picture I've made. I think it's my favorite film because it epitomizes everything I tried to say in all the other films in one package."
