Good news for fans who are awaiting the movie adaptation of the beloved children’s book series, Eloise. After three months of searching for the brightest star to portray the iconic character, Amy Sherman-Palladino has found her Eloise. The upcoming film is officially underway with two stars attached and a major media company is set to distribute.
The new Eloise film, based on the children’s book series written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight, will bring the beloved tale to life for a new generation. Find out what we know about the movie, including who will star and when it might be released.
Who is starring in the ‘Eloise’ film?
Finding the perfect person to take on the role of the eccentric little girl who has delighted fans for decades was no easy task. But after sharing a casting call in August searching for a new face to take on the iconic character, the crew found their Eloise.
Newcomer Mae Schenk will star as Eloise alongside veteran actor Ryan Reynolds, who will star as the villain, a role that was not a part of the original books. No other cast announcements have been made. Amy Sherman-Palladino, who has been responsible for iconic shows like Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is set to direct. She was also a co-writer along with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton.
Netflix has signed on as the project’s distributor and the film will be produced by Ryan Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort, with Reynolds, George Dewey, Ashley Fox, Johnny Pariseau and Woolverton serving as producers and Molly Milstein as executive producer.
“When Amy introduced us to Mae Schenk, we knew instantly she was Eloise,” said Fox and Pariseau. “She’s got the spark, the wit and just the right amount of mischief. We’re so excited to introduce her to the world.”
What is the plot of the ‘Eloise’ film?
While it is likely the upcoming movie will follow a similar storyline to the original Eloise books and the 2003 film, Eloise at the Plaza, there is no official plot yet. However Hannah Minghella, Netflix’s Head of Feature Animation and Family Film, shared a tidbit about their plans for the beloved young character.
“Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through today, when no family trip to New York City is complete without a stop at The Plaza,” said Minghella. “It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm—Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds—in this bold, hilarious and heartfelt new family film.”
When is the release date for the ‘Eloise’ film?
Although the stars have only just been announced, producers aren’t wasting any time. Production is slated to start in November 2025 in London. There is no release date set for the film just yet, but keep your eyes peeled for any more information about the film as the cast gears up to bring the beloved story to life on the big screen.
