Go Behind the Scenes of ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ With 18 Rare Photos From the Making of the 90-Year-Old Horror Classic
See Boris Karloff, Elsa Lanchester, Colin Clive and more bring one of the greatest horror sequels of all time to life!
The Bride of Frankenstein has long been regarded as one of the greatest sequels of all time, and many consider the 1935 classic to be even better than the original movie. The film features the same director (James Whale) and the same actors as Dr. Frankenstein and his monster (Colin Clive and Boris Karloff, respectively) as the 1931 Frankenstein, and adds the fabulous spectacle of Frankenstein’s bride, unforgettably played by Elsa Lanchester (in a meta twist, she also plays Frankenstein author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley in the opening scene). While Lanchester’s appearance in the film is fleeting, her impact is undeniable, and in just a few short minutes of screen time, the character became a horror icon who still inspires Halloween costumes 90 years later.
Frankenstein has been back in the conversation recently thanks to the new Netflix adaptation from acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro, so just in time for Halloween, we’re taking a look behind the scenes of The Bride of Frankenstein to see how the Universal Pictures monster movie became a highly influential example of horror at its finest.
