Everyone loves a good mystery, and whether it’s a gripping novel or a chilling television series or movie, there’s nothing more exciting than putting your sleuthing skills to the test to see if you can crack the code before the characters do. Now, imagine a mystery set on a luxury yacht with Keira Knightley as the lead and you’ve got a recipe for success. The Woman in Cabin 10, the bestselling novel by Ruth Ware, has been adapted into a film set to hit Netflix on October 10, and readers of the book and mystery fans can’t wait to see this thriller brought to life on screen. With the movie’s trailer having just been released, here, we take a look at what fans can expect, who will star and how closely it sticks to the novel.

‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ book summary

Ruth Ware’s New York Times bestseller hit shelves back in 2016 and chronicled the experiences of Lo Blacklock, a writer for a travel magazine who embarks on the assignment of a lifetime aboard a luxury cruise complete with fancy foods, comfortable lodgings and fellow guests who are as interesting as they are glamorous. Lo’s trip takes a turn, however, when she witnesses a passenger being thrown overboard. But when she alerts someone to what she saw, she’s told that everyone is accounted for. With no one buying her story, Lo finds herself swept up in a whirlwind whodunnit full of surprising twists.

Author Ruth Ware took inspiration from a few of her favorites authors, like Agatha Christie. “The initial seed for the book was the scene where Lo wakes in the night and hears a splash and runs to the balcony. So I knew right from the beginning that it was going to be set on a boat,” the author told Culturefly. “I think it was partly because so many people compared my first thriller, In a Dark, Dark Wood, to Christie, I was thinking about her plots and she excels at that stifled luxury feeling, she evokes it so well in Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile and And then there were None. So that was probably in the back of my mind when I was brainstorming.”

In the newly dropped trailer, the sinister scene is set from the first glimpse of Keira Knightley as Lo. Viewers get a peek at the people aboard the ship, and within seconds, a scream is heard, followed by the image of a body floating in the ocean. As in the novel, Lo’s claim is debunked, with crew members informing her that everyone on the ship is accounted for and that Cabin 10, the source of the commotion, was uninhabited. So begins a conspiracy one must see to believe, as Lo goes up against the people attempting to silence her from speaking about what she knows she saw.

“You never question whether or not she saw what she saw,” Director Simon Stone tells Netflix’s Tudum. “You agree completely with her. It’s her struggle against the conspiracy.”
