These Rare Pics From the ‘Clueless’ Beach Premiere Are Peak ’90s Nostalgia—Cher Would Approve!

It’s hard to believe it, but the 1995 teen movie Clueless is celebrating its 30th anniversary this summer. Written and directed by Amy Heckerling, the film tells the story of Cher (Alicia Silverstone) a shallow rich girl who sets out to give the new girl in school, Tai (the dearly missed Brittany Murphy), a makeover, all while navigating the ups and downs of teen life and ultimately developing feelings for her handsome ex-stepbrother, Josh (Paul Rudd). The colorful comedy remains beloved by multiple generations of viewers thanks to its charismatic young cast, fabulous fashions and hilarious dialogue, and it’s vibrant as ever three decades after it was released.

In honor of the milestone anniversary coming up on July 19, we’re taking a look back at the film’s ultra-’90s premiere. Rather than the typical red carpet affair, the premiere took place on a Malibu beach and featured a performance from the all-woman alt-rock band Luscious Jackson, who were featured on the movie’s soundtrack. While she wore a lot of colorful outfits in the movie (who can forget that yellow plaid miniskirt suit?), Clueless star Alicia Silverstone opted for a decidedly more minimal business-casual look for the premiere. Recently, it was announced that Silverstone will be reprising her signature role in a Clueless sequel series. Reflecting on the movie’s legacy in a Vogue interview, the actress said, “I’m always amazed at the longevity of Clueless. It's incredible that so many people love this film and not only continue to love it but continue to rediscover it. I'm sure I don't look the same but little kids will still come up to me asking, 'Are you Cher?' And I mean little little, you know? How cute is it that they've discovered Clueless because their parents are showing it to them? So many moms who were my age when it came out are so excited to show it to their sons and daughters now.”

Stacey Dash, who played Cher’s BFF Dionne Davenport, showed up to the premiere in a red cheongsam dress, as was a trend at the time. After Clueless, Dash appeared in a variety of reality shows and briefly became a commentator for Fox News.

Future Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross was part of the cast of the prime-time soap Melrose Place when she showed up to the Clueless premiere in a relaxed jeans-and-a-t-shirt look.

Stephen Dorff wasn’t in Clueless, but he had a connection to Alicia Silverstone, as he played her boyfriend in the 1993 music video for Aerosmith’s “Cryin’.” Amy Heckerling knew Silverstone was the girl to play Cher as soon as she saw the video, telling Rolling Stone, “Here’s how I found Alicia. I was minding my own business on my treadmill watching MTV when I saw ‘Cryin’' and just went cuckoo bananas.”

It comes as no surprise that along with the Baywatch cast members, a swimsuit model was also in attendance at the Clueless premiere. Angie Everhart, who was a staple of ’90s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues, showed up in a smart white suit (and not a bikini, as one might expect!)
