“Zoinks!” Scooby-Doo is making a comeback on Netflix with the platform’s upcoming live-action series. Although there have been numerous iterations of the classic cartoon over the years, the new series will star an entirely new cast and bring the beloved characters back to life for a new generation of fans.

Scooby-Doo first debuted in 1969 with the animated series, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, starring Casey Kasem, Nicole Jaffe and Don Messick. The show premiered on CBS and quickly became a Saturday morning cartoon staple, running until 1978. The show was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears to replace violent cartoons with the new lighthearted mystery-format.

Since the initial cartoon series, there have been over 15 different series and several films, among them Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo (1979-1983), What’s New, Scooby-Doo? (2002-2006) and the early 2000s live action movies starring Matthew Lillard, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

About the new series

With every new Scooby-Doo iteration comes a new name and life for the characters. The Netflix live action series, which has recently begun filming in Atlanta, Georgia, has officially been titled Scooby-Doo: Origins and will be a modern reimagining of the original gang: Shaggy, Freddy, Daphne, Velma and Scooby. The series will go back to the very first mystery that initially brought the gang together.

The official logline for the show reads, “During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy who may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Alongside the pragmatic and scientific townie Velma and the strange but ever-so-handsome new kid Freddy, they set out to solve the case that’s pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
