‘The Magicians’

What it’s about: The Magicians, based on Lev Grossman’s novel of the same name, puts a grown-up twist on the beloved fantasy trope of stumbling into a magical world a la The Chronicles of Narnia. Not only does this SYFY series hold a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s something of a cult-favorite series among dark academia fans on Reddit. The series follows Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph), who is recruited by Brakebills, a secret university for magicians. Meanwhile, his friend Julia is not admitted into the academy, but she’s determined to find a way in—no matter how dangerous the path becomes. Sprinkled with classroom settings, complex magic systems and compelling mysteries, the show remains an underrated gem in the genre.

‘Enola Holmes’

What it’s about: Enola Holmes is not firmly planted in the dark academia genre, but many fans of the show describe it as “an ode to dark academia,” thanks to its intellectual and mystery-driven themes and whimsical sense of adventure. The series centers on Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown), Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft’s (Sam Claflin) teenage sister, who uses her own detective skills to solve mysteries. On her 16th birthday, Enola’s mother disappears and she flees her family estate to find her.

‘Agatha Christie’s Poirot’

What it’s about: Agatha Christie’s Poirot, or simply Poirot, is a long-loved British mystery drama series starring David Suchet that ran from 1989 through 2013. The series is based on Christie’s bestselling crime novels starring the fan-favorite character, detective Hercule Poirot. Each whodunit-style episode revolves around Poirot investigating and cracking a case. Fun fact? Suchet is reportedly the only actor to ever receive the full blessing and support of the real-life Christie family. They even went as far as to give him unpublished works of Christie’s to help him with his character studies. That’s reason enough to give this one a whirl!

‘Penny Dreadful’

What it’s about: If you’re looking to curl up with a mysterious TV show chock full of gothic visuals, chilling moments and incredible costuming, look no further than Penny Dreadful. Set in 1891 Victorian London, the story follows an American gun show and roadshow artist named Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), who is hired by adventurers Vanessa (Eva Green) and Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) to help save Malcolm’s daughter from a creature. The trio also enlists a young doctor named Victor Frankenstein for additional help.

‘A Discovery of Witches’

 

What it’s about: Does romantic dark academia with a supernatural twist sound like your cup of tea? If so, A Discovery of Witches awaits! Set against the moody, dimly lit halls of Oxford University, the series follows historian and reluctant witch (Teresa Palmer) as she discovers a mysterious manuscript that catapults her into a world of magic, vampires and forbidden knowledge. Enter the charming vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode). Together, they investigate clues, travel through time, uncover ancient secrets—and ignore an inconvenient mutual attraction—in an effort to solve the mystery of the manuscript. A fan on Reddit described the show as “the perfect thing to watch when you’re craving gorgeous dark academia settings paired with magic, witches and dashing vampires.”

The plot follows Wednesday, the teenage daughter of the Addams Family, after she’s sent to Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts. Here, she must master her psychic abilities, stop an evil creature and crack a long-buried family mystery.

‘One of Us Is Lying’

What it’s about: Based on Karen McManus’ bestselling novel of the same name, One of Us Is Lying is dark academia with a teen-drama mystery twist. The show centers on four high school students— Addy, Nate, Bronwyn and Cooper—who become suspects after a fellow classmate dies in detention. Five students walked into detention, but only four walked out alive. Who is lying here? This soapy teen drama murder mystery will leave fans of dark academia satisfied. “I finished watching One of Us Is Lying and I give it a 9/10,” one fan said on Reddit. “The series was amazing. The characters’ character developments, especially Addy, were awe-inspiring. I also loved how Bronwyn was this good academic girl at first but over time her true colors are revealed.”
