Class is back in session! Maxton Hall, the breakout Prime Video series—based on Mona Kasten’s Save Me book trilogy—just dropped the trailer for season 2 and it promises another emotional, high-stakes rollercoaster. Since its premiere, Maxton Hall has become a global sensation, racking up more than 100 million views worldwide on Prime Video and sparking hundreds of viral fan-run social media accounts dedicated to the show. The series follows ambitious student, Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten) and her arrogant classmate James Beaufort (Damien Hardung) as they clash—in more ways than one.

In the current wave of soapy teen drama franchises with ferocious fandoms, like The Summer I Turned Pretty and My Life With The Walter Boys, Maxton Hall is especially impressive—not just for its gripping story, but because it’s a German-language series. In fact, it captured the hearts of viewers in 120 countries when it first debuted and currently holds the spot for Prime Video’s most-watched international series. So if you’re impatiently awaiting the arrival of Season 2, want to see the trailer or hear what castmates are saying BTS (behind-the-scenes), you’re in the right place! Here, we gathered up all the latest on-set secrets, Season 2’s release date, what Kasten really thinks about the book-to-screen adaptation and more!

Season 2 is based on the second book in Kasten’s German-language bestselling trilogy. Due to the global outpouring, the books were recently translated into English and published in America for the first time. Save Me (based on season 1) was released on July 1, Save You (based on season 2) was released on September 2. The third season—which has already been greenlit—is based on the final book in the trilogy, Save Us. The final book is out on November 4.

With Ruby and James’ angsty “will they, won’t they” dynamic, fans were left on the edge of their seats at the end of Maxton Hall Season 1. And according to Prime Video’s official logline, Season 2 is guaranteed to be another rollercoaster of emotions: “Those who fly high can also fall low… After their passionate night together in Oxford and her greatest life goal within reach, everything seems to be going perfectly for Ruby. But a stroke of fate in James’ family changes everything and James himself, of all people, brings her back from cloud nine to a harsh reality. Ruby is devastated. She has never had such strong feelings for anyone as she does for James – and she has never been so hurt by anyone either. She wants her old life back, where no one at Maxton Hall knew her and she wasn’t part of the elitist world of her classmates. But she can’t forget James – especially since he’s doing everything he can to win her back.”

Mona Kasten’s reaction to ‘Maxton Hall’ success

Kasten recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss her goals while writing the books and how she felt watching the story come to life on screen. “Watching Damian and Harriet bring my book characters to life has been truly special. They perfectly captured Ruby’s determination and eagerness, as well as the many layers of James’ personality,” she told the outlet.

“I wanted to write a story that had all the emotional highs and lows, unexpected twists and intense character dynamics I loved in the teen dramas I grew up with; the kind of stories where you’d count down the days until the next episode,” Kasten said. “I wanted readers to feel fully immersed in that world, to fall in love, gasp at secrets and root for characters. By the end, I wanted readers to feel like they had been through it all with them and come out stronger on the other side.”

‘Maxton Hall’ Cast On Season 2: “It felt existential”

Damian Hardung, who portrays James Beaufort, felt emotional after watching episode one of Season 2 at the show’s premiere last weekend. “This weekend—showing the first episode of Season 2—was absurd. We ripped our hearts out making this. It’s about how we deal with loss. About what matters. Shooting it felt existential. I can’t for you all around the globe to see it. Completely unreal. Overwhelming,” he said on Instagram. “In Season 2, James discovers how we can become the person he feels, deep down, he could be.”

Herbig-Matten, who plays Ruby Bell, was feeling all her feelings after the premiere, too. “Honestly, sometimes I forget that people will actually see what we created last year,” she shared on Instagram. “It all felt so intimate and private because of all the emotions we poured into these characters.”

During Prime Video’s Maxton Hall reunion special in August, fans had a chance to ask the cast their burning questions. One fan asked: Which character underwent the greatest development in Season 2? Nearly the entire cast responded with James. Another fan asked: What was the funniest moment on set this season? “There was one party scene in this season,” says Andrea Guo, who portrays Ruby’s best friend Lily Wang. “That was quite fun to play—so definitely get excited to see that.”

The dramatic trailer for Maxton Hall’s Season 2 begins with epic music and stunning scenes—from the teens’ towering private school to the impeccably dressed students. “Some dreams are so beautiful that you want to stop time,” Herbig-Matten’s Ruby says in the trailer. “And sometimes one second is enough to turn them into a nightmare.” The trailer flashes between moments of Ruby and James in love to Ruby’s face of shock as James is seen kissing another girl at a party.
