Hold onto your beach towels, because Belly’s love story isn’t over! In a shocking twist that has fans everywhere celebrating, The Summer I Turned Pretty creator Jenny Han just dropped the news we’ve all been hoping for—there’s going to be a movie. After three drama-filled seasons of love, loss and a whole lot of will-they-or-won’t-they, the love story has finally come to an end—or so everyone thought.

Get all of the details on this major news and find out everything we know about how this story will continue to unravel. (Fair warning—if you haven’t caught the finale yet, you might want to bookmark this and come back after you’ve grabbed the tissues!).

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ isn’t over yet

If you’ve been following this dreamy love triangle since the show started in 2022, you know it’s based on Jenny Han’s beloved book trilogy from 2009 to 2011—and she knew exactly how to tug at our heartstrings. After over a decade of waiting to see the love story brought to life, the author and show creator did not disappoint, casting Lola Tung, Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno in the lead roles.

And wow, did we all fall in love with this show! The Summer I Turned Pretty captured our hearts, drawing over 25 million viewers to the final season in just one week—proving that good old-fashioned romance never goes out of style. While Han originally planned to end the story there, she realized there was still one more beautiful chapter to tell—and honestly, we couldn’t be more grateful she listened to her heart (and ours!).

“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han said in an official press release. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”

At the end of the final episode, Han shared a note with fans that had heads spinning. One line of this read, “Maybe we’ll meet again one summer in Cousins.”

At the premiere for the show’s third and final season in Paris, the cast and crew surprised everyone by making this incredible announcement. The stars posed on the red carpet, which had a backdrop with the “The Summer I Turned Pretty The Movie”. The photo was then posted to the official Instagram account, announcing it to fans worldwide.

The finale, which aired on September 17, revealed that Belly (Lola Tung) chose Conrad (Christopher Briney) after years of indecision. Although romance lovers may have known all along that they were meant to be, the show certainly took everyone on a wild ride.

The series closely followed the plot of the books, with a few major changes along the way but with the same end goal. However, the finale missed one key plot point: Belly and Conrad’s wedding. The books end with the couple tying the knot and jumping into the ocean as they begin their infinity together, but the series didn’t get to that. Despite them finally choosing each other, there was no ring on Belly’s finger.

Han has yet to reveal any details about the film, but it seems likely the film could follow the engagement and wedding between Belly and Conrad.

When will ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ movie be released?

Just this morning, Tung, Briney, Casalegno and Han appeared on the TODAY show, where they were asked about the upcoming film. Although they couldn’t share any details yet, Han did share that the script isn’t exactly done just yet.

It’s still a little too soon to say,” she said on the morning show. “But my showrunner and I have finished a draft, so we’re chugging along.”

So although there is no release date just yet, you can be content with the fact that this story isn’t over yet and there will be another summer in Cousins Beach.
