The teaser had fans on the edge of their seats

It was the song change heard around the world. A teaser for Season three of The Summer I Turned Pretty has officially dropped, and fans can’t stop talking about it. The 52-second clip gives fans of Team Jeremiah a 40-second montage of their sweetest moments from the upcoming season to enjoy. But it’s the last seven seconds that really got people in a frenzy.

Not only did the clip feed fans of both brothers, but Taylor Swift fans noticed a major change in music that says everything. In fact, take a look at the teaser and find out why everyone is gearing up for an exciting season.

About the Taylor Swift song change

If you’re not a deep-rooted Taylor Swift fan or you don’t know every lyric by heart, you might’ve missed this key moment in the new teaser. But Jenny Han, the showrunner and author of The Summer I Turned Pretty books, always has something up her sleeve and eagle-eyed fans have caught on.

The clip with Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) features the Taylor Swift song, “Daylight,” a song that explores leaving a dark period and exploring the light of a new love. The track plays in the background of a montage of the two lovers.

But when the clip switches to Conrad (Christopher Briney) at the front door (with the candy cane!), so does the song. When he appears, the clip goes quiet and soon “Red” begins playing with the lyric, “But loving him was Red.”

This change might seem small to some, but certified Taylor Swift fans know there is significant meaning behind this. The song “Red” explores the feeling of loss over an almost-perfect relationship that can’t be forgotten. So, when the song begins playing over a clip of Conrad, it shows that Belly hasn’t truly moved on from him and that she still holds him and their previous relationship in her heart.

As the lyric in “Daylight” goes: “I once believed love would be (burning red) … But it’s golden,” while the lyric in “Red” says, “But loving him was red.” And considering Belly has loved Conrad for her entire life, it’s clear he is her “red” love.

What to expect from Season 3

Han has kept the secrets of season 3 close to the vest, but the synopsis of the show has given a little bit of insight on what to expect in the upcoming episodes.

“It’s the end of her junior year of college, and Belly’s looking forward to another summer in Cousins with her soulmate, Jeremiah. Her future seems set, until some core-shaking events bring her first love Conrad back into her life,” the synopsis reads.

“Now on the brink of adulthood, Belly finds herself at a crossroads and must decide which brother has her heart.”

And while fans of the original books think they know how the third season will go, Han has said that just might not be the case.

“There are the things that [fans] know and then there are things they think they know, and then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them,” she explained.

But don’t fret: Han knows how to keep her fans happy and with the thrilling new teaser, it seems she is going to give everyone just what they want.
