Why will there be a part 2?

After the long-awaited 90-minute special aired last month, fans may be wondering why there is going to be a second part. The answer? Creator Phil Rosenthal and star Ray Romano want to give the fans even more.

While the original special was 90 minutes long, things had to be removedfrom the final cut to reach that 90-minute mark. Aside from the stars heading to the Barone family living room, there were also pre-taped interviews with the show’s writers, producers and guest stars that didn’t make it into the special.

It’s a 90-minute special, which is only 66 minutes [with no commercials],” Romano said about the original special. “We were out there for almost two and a half hours, three hours, maybe. And not only that, but all the [pre-taped] interviews with the writers and the guest stars.”

There were also some special moments filmed that didn’t make it into the special that both Rosenthal and Romano want fans to experience.

“The one thing that was hard for Phil and I to cut was we did a little segment about our fathers. My father and his father both did guest spots together as two buddies from the Elks Lodge,” Romano said. “We showed a clip of them, and we talked about them. In the first cut of the show, they were in it. But then, when we realized we got to cut 20 minutes, we had to get rid of that, but hopefully that can get in on the rerun.”

There was also the moment Rosenthal and Romano first saw the re-created TV set and their reaction to seeing it all again, which is expected to be included in part 2.

Who will appear on the anniversary special?

Most of your favorite cast members will be gathering together, and while we’ve lost a few beloved stars over the years, the special will include moving tributes celebrating their unforgettable contributions to the show.

The program will be hosted by Ray Romano alongside the show’s creator, Phil Rosenthal. And the gang’s all here: Patricia Heaton (Debra), Brad Garrett (Robert), Monica Horan (Amy), Madylin Sweeten (Ally) and Sullivan Sweeten (Michael) will all be sharing memories and laughs.

Why the reunion is 29 years after its debut

You might’ve caught that tonight’s reunion isn’t exactly a 30-year extravaganza. In fact, it’s only been 29 years and two months since Everybody Loves Raymond first made its way into our hearts. The series creator, Phil Rosenthal, says there is a reason for that.

The reason I think they’re doing it now is because they wanted it now,” Rosenthal said of CBS. “I’ve been trying to have a reunion special for 10 years. I was ready to do the 20th anniversary, I was ready to do the 25th anniversary, but there wasn’t an appetite for it at CBS… I don’t care when it is. I just selfishly wanted to see my friends and celebrate our nice show.” He then added, “That’s when I met Ray, in 95, and I wrote the pilot in 95 so the show was actually born 30 years ago.”

Ray Romano, the series star and comedian, shared his own thoughts on the subject, saying, “That was just rounding off.” He added a more serious note, explaining, “CBS had an opening for this November week, they said, ‘You know what, it’d be great to put it on during Thanksgiving week.’ So yeah, technically, it’s a few months earlier for our 30th anniversary, but it is the 30th anniversary of when I did Letterman, which got me the production deal to make the sitcom there.”

Everybody Loves Raymond ran for nine seasons, between 1996 and 2005, winning 15 Emmy Awards. What made it so special? Creator Phil Rosenthal and star Ray Romano drew from real life—Romano’s own marriage and family experiences—to create storylines that felt like they were happening in your own living room.

Now, almost 20 years after the series finale, we get to experience that magic all over again. So grab your favorite cozy blanket, maybe some tissues (happy ones!), and get ready to spend an evening with the family we all wish lived next door. Set your alarms for tonight at 8 PM and catch the Everybody Loves Raymond Reunion on CBS and Paramount+—this is one you won’t want to miss!
