In the age of reboots, revivals and renewals of your favorite television programs, fans of beloved sitcoms like Everybody Loves Raymond are left wondering whether their favorite shows will come back for another life.

Stars Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton have spoken about the topic recently while visiting The Paley Museum, which they attended along with series creator Phil Rosenthal and guest star Maggie Wheeler. However, the stars don’t seem confident that there will ever be another Everybody Loves Raymond.

No, there won’t be a reboot,” Romano shared. “The obvious [reason] is Peter [Boyle] and Doris [Roberts] and one of the kids — they’re no longer with us. We’re all heartbroken. They’re a big part of the show, the dynamic.”

Everybody Loves Raymond starred Peter Boyle as Frank Barone and Doris Roberts as Marie Barone, the nosy parents of Ray, who often butted into his life with Heaton’s character, Debra. However, since the series ended, both Boyle and Roberts have died in 2006 and 2016, respectively. Sawyer Sweeten, who starred as one of Romano’s sons, Geoffrey, also sadly died in 2015.

Without three of the main characters, the story of the series would be entirely different and possibly ruin the memory of an iconic cast.

“Without them, I don’t know what the dynamic is,” Romano said. “We love the show too much, we respect it too much to even try to do it.

Heaton chimed in with similar thoughts, explaining, “To try to do it again without the cast members that we’ve lost would be a disservice to the show…You shouldn’t try to go back and redo something that is pretty much perfect. We need to just leave it there and let people enjoy it for what it was.”

Everybody Loves Raymond ran for nine seasons, from 1996 until 2005. While the series creator knew it was time to bring the show to a close, the network was interested in keeping the series around for another three years.

Heaton explained Rosenthal “didn’t want to run the show into the ground.”

Other cast members share thoughts on possible reboot

Romano and Heaton aren’t the only ones who have opened up about what a potential reboot would look like. Brad Garrett, who starred as Ray’s brother, Robert, shared similar thoughts with his co-stars when asked earlier this month.

“There won’t be, and I’m just saying that because that’s something that Ray and Phil [Rosenthal] have always said,” Garrett confirmed. “There is no show without the parents. They were the catalyst, and to do anything that would resemble that wouldn’t be right to the audiences or to the loyal fan base. And it was about two families, and you can’t get around that.”
