The popular spinoff of The Bachelor follows mature singles looking for love, and after the debut season starring Gerry Turner kept viewers glued to the screen, ABC recently announced that the follow-up season would be led by former football player Mel Owens. Who is the ‘Golden Bachelor’ star Mel Owens?
Sixty-six-year-old Mel played professional football with the L.A. Rams for nine seasons, and after hanging up his helmet, the Detroit native pursued a career in law. Relocating to Orange County, California, Owens’ specialty within his career is representing those looking to find justice for sports-related injuries—something he as a former NFL player knows a thing or two about. According to the NBO Law website, the firm in which he is a partner, he earned his Series 7 License post-NFL and worked as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch for some time before heading to law school.
Owens was married once before and welcomed two children, but eventually things ended around the same time that his father passed away, marking a turning point in his life. From that point forward, his main priority was fatherhood and raising his sons. Now, Owens is ready for his next chapter.
Why did Mel Owens pursue ‘The Golden Bachelor’?
“After several years as a devoted dad, Owens is ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship–sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple,” said a press release. “As the Golden Bachelor, he’s eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he’s been waiting for in his golden years.”
When will the new season of ‘The Golden Bachelor’ premiere?
Though the premiere date of The Golden Bachelor has yet to be announced, fans are excited at what’s to come in this next installment. The first season of the show was led by Gerry Turner, a former restaurateur who fell for contestant Theresa Nist by the end of the season’s run. The duo eventually married and after their Golden Bachelor journey, gave fans an up-close-and-personal look at their life together after the show had aired. Last April, the duo announced that they would be going their separate ways.
“Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations,” Gerry told Good Morning America. “We’ve looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth and—and we’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to dissolve our marriage.” Though things may not have worked out for this Golden Bachelor, we have high hopes that Owens will find his forever in one of the lovely ladies that will grace this series.
