In addition to the romance, drama and tension that make each episode of Outlander: Blood of My Blood entirely gripping, the places in which this series is filmed bring the story to life as well. Scotland’s landscape plays an important role in telling this story, and watching the journeys of Ellen, Brian, Julia and Henry unfold under the Highlands sky is a one-of-a-kind experience.
“The team who work with me on Outlander: Blood of My Blood have such a font of knowledge—of every glen, loch, munro and moss covered glade as well as castles, kirks (or churches) and bothies—that provided a great start,” said Beverly Syme, the show’s location manager, in conversation with Country & Town House. “We really begin with the story and work with the showrunners, production designers and directors to find the locations that sing on camera.”
Where was ‘Blood of My Blood’ filmed?

Doune Castle is Castle Leoch
Castle Leoch is home to Ellen, Colum and Dougal, so finding a location fit for the MacKenzies was important. While much of the interior shots were filmed on a curated set in a studio, the exterior of Castle Leoch is actually Scotland’s own Doune Castle. This historic masterpiece has served as the backdrop for many of our favorite series, including the original Outlander, Game of Thrones and Monty Python. This magnificent filming location with a rich history is actually open to the public, and fans of Outlander and Blood of My Blood can visit this spot and immerse themselves in it all. Kelvingrove Park is where Julia and Henry meet for the first time
Julia and Henry exchanged a series of letters while he was off fighting in World War I and she was working in London’s censorship office. The time in between their correspondence only built up the anticipation until they would finally meet in person, plus, the time it took for Henry to respond often left his future wife wondering about his fate. However, the duo’s first meeting, while perhaps a little unrealistic, was nothing short of spectacular. Henry and Julia met for the first time in person on a set of stairs, actually located in Kelvingrove Park. This picturesque Glasgow Park is also open to the public and just might be the perfect spot for a meet-cute of your own!
Balvaird Castle is Castle Leathers
Castle Leathers is where Lord Lovat resides and now, where Julia is employed while she comes up with a plan to reunite with her hubby. The show’s location manager revealed that the choice of this particular Castle was deliberate, to essentially represent the prison Julia finds herself in. Though the interiors were shot in a studio as well, Balvaird Castle is open to the public if you wish to visit it. However, only the exteriors are available for viewing.
