  • Here, take a look back at what went down in 'Ransom Canyon' Season 1.

Ransom Canyon Season 2 debuts on Netflix on July 23, and it’s been over a year since Season 1 first hit our screens, introducing us to Staten, Quinn and the rest of their Texas crew. The first season was loaded with drama at nearly every turn, and Ransom Canyon Season 2 is sure to be no different. If you can’t quite remember all that went down in the first season, allow us to refresh your memory with this recap.

Staten Kirkland’s story weaves through the series

Josh Duhamel stars as Staten Kirkland. The owner of the Double K Ranch, he’s dealt with the death of both his wife and his son, the latter killed in a car accident. Discovering remnants from another car at the site of his son’s crash, we come to learn there was someone else involved.

On the romantic front, there’s clear chemistry between he and Quinn O’Grady, played by Minka Kelly. Over the course of the season, their will-they won’t-they dynamic makes for a slow burn romance folks loved rooting for, but at the end of the season, Quinn says goodbye, taking on a piano gig in New York.

As far as his business goes, Staten is against a proposed pipeline that would run through his property, and one of his most aggressive foes is his brother-in-law Davis (who also happens to be vying for Quinn’s affection throughout Season 1). When Staten’s father Sam shows support for the pipeline and threatens Staten’s status as trustee of the ranch, his foundation is shaken.

Quinn’s journey of self discovery

Minka Kelly brings Quinn to life, the skilled concert pianist who has made her way back to her hometown of Ransom Canyon. While in Ransom, she dedicates her time to reviving Gracie’s Dance Hall alongside Ellie, who also splits her time caring for Cap Fuller, owner of Fuller Ranch. Quinn is passionate about Gracie’s, but she’s financially in a tough spot. When an investment offer from Austin Water & Power comes along (the company behind the proposed pipeline), Quinn sees a bright future ahead for her business, unaware of their ulterior motives.

Quinn is ultimately swindled by AWP, which leads her to take on a piano gig in New York City for six months.

Cap Fuller (James Brolin) owns Fuller Ranch, and is cared for by the strong-willed Ellie Estevez, who helps Quinn run Gracie’s. Yancy Grey is a mysterious drifter who’s rolled into town, looking for work on the ranch, but unbeknownst to Cap, Yancy is an ex-con. Striking up a deal with Davis, in exchange for early parole and a major payout, Yancy must infiltrate Cap’s ranch and convince him to also sell to AWP. The twist? Yancy is actually Cap’s long-lost grandson.

Ellie and Yancy grow close despite her initial reservations about him, and over time, Yancy begins second guessing his initial associations. Before he can come clean to Cap, however, the rancher sadly passes away.

Having endured so much together, Yancy asks Ellie to marry him, but right before she can, a woman arrives on the scene claiming to be his wife.

The young residents of Ransom Canyon have a whole lot of drama of their own

Lauren is the daughter of the town sheriff. She grows close to Lucas, who works on the Double K Ranch and comes from a tough background. As the series progresses, her personal life takes a dark turn when she learns that her mom was having an affair with Lucas’ older brother and that she was involved in the death of Staten’s son.

As we await Season 2, catch up on Ransom Canyon Season 1 on Netflix now.
