In just about a week, fans of Little House on the Prairie will be able to head back to the beloved town where the Ingalls family formerly resided—and no, we’re not talking about Walnut Grove.

Although the original television series, which aired between 1974 and 1983, largely took place in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, the new iteration of the show’s first season will take place in Independence, Kansas.

Although the original Little House on the Prairie, which aired from 1974 to 1983, spent most of its time in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, the new adaptation’s first season will instead focus on the Ingalls family’s earlier chapter in Independence, Kansas.

The original series briefly explored the family’s life in Independence during its two-hour pilot movie before shifting to Walnut Grove for the regular series. By spending more time in Kansas, the new version will give viewers a deeper look at this transitional period in the Ingalls family’s journey—while also introducing new characters they met along the way.

Meet the new characters that will star in Little House on the Prairie and learn more about who you will get to know from Independence, Kansas.

Warren Christie as Mr. Edwards

Although you likely remember the character of Mr. Edwards from the original as portrayed by Victor French, the character initially lived with the Ingalls in Independence! This time around, the iconic role will be portrayed by Warren Christie, who brings him to life in an entirely new light.

The Civil War veteran is also the town’s mystery man, who catches the attention of nearly every woman around. He first meets the Ingalls after they decide to settle in Independence, and although he’s in a dark place at the time, the bond they form is undeniable.

Series creator Rebecca Sonnenshine shared a tidbit of what you can expect from this new version of Mr. Edwards, offering, “He’s surviving, not thriving.” But creating connections  with the Ingalls “gives him a reason to keep going.”

If you’re eager to see Warren Christie in some of his previous roles, you can catch him in Apollo 18 (2011), The Watchful Eye (2023), A Royal Montana Christmas (2025) and several other Hallmark films.

Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann

As a respected member of the community, Dr. George Tann (played by Jocko Sims) is an important figure in both the new series and the Little House on the Prairie books. The real Dr. Tann, who lived in Independence during the Ingalls family’s time there, was known for his kindness and compassion. He also played a crucial role in the family’s survival, helping save the Ingalls after all of them contracted malaria.

“I found his tombstone online, and they give him credit for saving the lives of the Ingalls,” Sims said. “Without Dr. Tann, there wouldn’t be any Little House on the Prairie.”

Although Dr. George Tann was a real doctor and appeared in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, he was left out of the initial series, likely due to the limited time spent in Independence.

Jocko Sim’s previous credits include New Amsterdam (2018-2022) and Grosse Pointe Garden Society (2025).

Barrett Doss as Emily Henderson

As the woman who runs the town’s General Store, Emily Henderson plays a big role in the lives of the Ingalls. She’s kind and caring, even taking in an orphan child, Caleb, who wanders into Independence.

Not only does Emily and the Ingalls family interact when they come in to shop, but she shows Caroline (Crosby Fitzgerald) what it’s like for a woman to support herself and a child on her own, something she never witnessed before.

William Mitchell is a mixed-blood Osage man who is already residing in Independence, Kansas when the Ingalls family arrives. Although the character was not in the books or the original series, the addition was made to give a point of view to the Osage people depicted in the books.

Sonnenshine shared that they “wanted a family who mirrored the Ingalls — a married couple with a daughter and a really wonderful romantic relationship, but who also have disagreements, just like Caroline and Charles.”

Married to White Sun and father to Good Eagle, Mitchell is tenderhearted and has made a life for he and his family on the prairie. It was there that he learned to become a successful farmer while also caring for the safety and protection of the land and his people.

Alyssa Wapanatâhk as White Sun

Although White Sun sometimes sees things more cynically than her husband, she is “opinionated, beautiful, and has a sharp sense of humor.” She is married to William Mitchell and the mother of daughter Good Eagle.

Wapanatâhk was excited to bring the character to life, especially because she was being created from scratch. She shared, “I knew the Osage family weren’t included in the original series, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, we’re going to make some type of movement and change.”

Portraying Good Eagle, the daughter of Mitchell and White Sun, is Wren Zhawenim. The character is similar to Laura as she is a bit of a tomboy, imaginative and loves the outdoors. The two learn from each other throughout the season and soon become friends.

“Good Eagle has taught Laura a lot, including how to read,” Alice Halsey, who plays Laura, said. “They both appreciate each other.”

Described as “a beautiful and happily widowed outcast who owns a card room and bar on the edge of town,” the character of Lacey Aubert is an unexpected addition to the story. The character is meant to expand the Ingalls’ universe and introduce Laura to an entirely new world.

The actress who portrays Lacey, Rebecca Amzallag, spoke to Woman’s World about her character and what she means to Laura. “She’s very loyal, she likes to fight for the underdog and she’s a lot of fun,” Amzallag said. “She’s also an eye opener for Laura. In the grand scheme of the show, Laura needs to know it’s possible; that it’s a representation of what freedom can be. It doesn’t have to be this kind of stagnant, boring life.”

You can see Rebecca Amzallag in projects such as Titans (2022-2023) and Hello Darling (2025).

Be sure to tune into Little House on the Prairie on July 9, only on Netflix!
