Ahead of the Season 5 premiere of The Chosen, Jenkins and Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus—along with Elizabeth Tabish, George H. Xanthis, Abe Bueno-Jallad, Austin Reed Alleman and other cast members—stood in Times Square as the billboards displayed breath-taking portraits taken by iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz. Each photo portrays several powerful moments that will take place in Season 5, like the Last Supper and Judas’ betrayal.

“I admire what Dallas Jenkins is doing so much…He is the artist of our time doing the Bible,” said Leibovitz.

For Jenkins, this moment—although unexpected—is a long time coming. “Seven years ago, I did a little short film about the birth of Christ on my friend’s farm in Illinois, 20 minutes from my house. That became four episodes in Season 1,” Jenkins tells Woman’s World in Times Square. “And then that became eight episodes, and then it started to grow. And now, Annie Leibovitz did portraits for Season 5, and we’re taking over Times Square. This is a surreal moment.”

What to expect from ‘The Chosen’ Season 5

Since the show follows the chronological order of the Bible, fans can anticipate what may be to come. But Jenkins and Roumie ensure there are still many unexpected scenes in store.

“There is a big moment that when we did a little sneak for a crowd of about 5,000 people at our ChosenCon, it was such a surprise, they freaked out for two minutes!” Jenkins says. “But the thing with The Chosen is, even when you know the stories from the Bible, we’re going to bring it in a way that is faithful to the story, but also gives you a human perspective that you haven’t seen before.

“We remove it from a stained glass window, we take it down from a painting, and it becomes an actual human moment that you can identify with. So the triumphal entry, the turning over the tables in the temple, the betrayal of Judas, the Last Supper—these are all moments you’re going to feel viscerally because you can identify with the people involved.”

As Season 5 takes viewers on a journey through Holy Week, leading up to the crucifixion, Jenkins and Roumie guarantee there will be many heart-tugging moments.

“The Garden of Gethsemane was a very difficult scene in Jesus’ life,” Roumie tells Woman’s World. “So to portray that was trying to connect with all the sorrow that he went through.

“I think [Season 5] maybe prepares viewers’ hearts for the magnitude of the sacrifice that Jesus made on Calvary. I think it’s a really appropriate and sobering precursor to Season 6.”

As for Jenkins, he shines a light on the emotions that the rest of Jesus’ followers will be feeling as each episode unfolds.

“All of the apostles spend this whole week confused and not understanding. Why would Jesus behave this way? If he’s the Messiah, why are you dividing people? They were all worshiping you at the beginning of the week, and now they want to kill you because of decisions you’ve made. Can you still follow? Can you still have faith when you don’t understand?” Jenkins reveals to Woman’s World

“We know Judas couldn’t and what happened to Judas, but the other apostles decided to still follow and still have faith, even though they didn’t understand. I think that watching that unfold is very emotional.”
