When it comes to medical dramas, they can be hit or miss. Depending on what you like, you might enjoy it when the focus is less on medical accuracy and more on soapy storylines and interpersonal drama between characters. However, if you prefer a grittier, realistic look at the everyday life of a typical healthcare worker, then there’s a chance you’ve dove head first into The Pitt, which debuted its Season 2 premiere on January 8.

Noah Wyle leads this series as Dr. Robby, and there’s something to be said about his expert portrayal of this character—The 54-year-old star even took home a SAG Actor Award last night for Lead Actor in a Drama Series (the series also won for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series!)

That being said, if you’re hoping to see a lot more Dr. Robby on your screen, then you’ll be excited to know that Season 3 of The Pitt has already been confirmed, and while Season 2 is still unfolding, Wyle pulled the curtain back on what we might expect from the show’s third installment.

‘The Pitt’ Season 3 announcement came right before the Season 2 premiere

On January 7, the day before Season 2 of The Pitt premiered on HBO, the talented cast and crew who brought this season to life gathered in celebration of the show’s premiere. At this premiere, HBO and HBO Max Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys announced that the show would be renewed for a third season. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, partially because the first season of the show was such a major success, but also because Bloys has praised the model of the show publicly before.

“Obviously, The Pitt was very instructive for us, because I think as an industry, we’ve gotten away from television, which used to be 26 episodes when I started; the standard whittled down to 22 episodes,” he told Deadline back in November. “But you really have to set that up from the beginning to give yourself worlds that generate, in this case, 15 hours of story. It’s why hospital shows were a staple, because a new story walks in the door, or several walk in the door every time. And cop shows.” He continued, “You have to set up, first, a world that generates the story, and you also have to work with people who know how to do that.”

What will ‘The Pitt’ Season 3 be about?

With the second season still airing, there’s still quite a bit that will unfold before the season concludes, most of which will have implications for the third season. However, being that the show so closely reflects the real-life experiences of healthcare professionals, Noah Wyle revealed that there’s plenty of source material in everyday life that Season 3 will likely use in its storylines.

“When you have characters that are as rich and diverse and as multi-dimensional as the ones that we have, it’s very easy to just sort of plot them into the future and figure out what they would be struggling with at that point,” Noah Wyle told the press as reported by Deadline. “But, obviously these cuts in Medicare, the ones that are going to affect Americans and put them off the rolls, hospital closures, there’s all sorts of very pressing issues that are facing hospitals and health care workers in America, and we’ve only scratched the surface,” he shared.

We’re already about halfway through Season 2 of The Pitt, and there’s sure to be a lot more drama and emergency room chaos coming our way in the second half of the season. Here, a recap of what’s gone down in Season 2 so far.

‘The Pitt’ Season 2 recap

The second season of The Pitt began by establishing the fact that Dr. Robby would be taking a sabbatical, and the follow-up chapter to Season 1 follows the same format as the original, chronicling one full shift in The Pitt, each episode capturing one hour. At the start of the season, we also learn that it is the Fourth of July weekend—meaning there’s no saying what might walk through that door. One major point of conflict in the second season is the introduction of Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, Dr. Robby’s replacement during his sabbatical who quickly demonstrates that she has her own way of doing things. Other characters like Dr. Langdon and Dr. King are also grappling with their own personal issues—Langdon struggles to find his footing after his rehab stint as he and Dr. Robby tiptoe around one another, while King struggles with her upcoming deposition for a malpractice suit she was named in. The cases that have already come through the doors of The Pitt have kept us glued to the screen, but now, with a cyberattack forcing the hospital to shut down their computer systems, things have only gotten more complicated.
