It’s been nearly two years since Blue Bloods wrapped after 14 seasons, and fans still haven’t stopped missing the Reagan family dinners, New York City drama and weekly crime-solving action. Even with the new spinoff, Boston Blue, starring Donnie Wahlberg, longtime viewers are still nostalgic for the original NYC-based hit.
Now, nearly seven years after the show’s 10th season aired, details about Tom Selleck’s behind-the-scenes CBS contract demands are making waves again. The actor, who led the series for all 14 seasons, has been open about how heartbroken he was to see the show end. And back when Blue Bloods was negotiating its 10th season, Selleck’s deep love for the series reportedly led him to make a few very specific requests to CBS before signing on for more episodes.
What were Tom Selleck’s CBS contract demands?
“One of the things I said is I want a separate announcement,” Selleck shared in a 2019 interview. “I’m sick of this. We picked up six shows, and oh, yeah, Blue Bloods is one of them from the network. I think we’ve earned our own announcement and we got that.”
Selleck revealed that whenever CBS announced its lineup of returning shows, Blue Bloods would simply be grouped in with the rest of the network’s renewals. But in the actor’s eyes, the long-running hit had earned something bigger. After years of strong ratings and a fiercely loyal fanbase, Selleck believed the series deserved its own standalone announcement—and he reportedly pushed CBS to give the show that extra recognition.
The actor added, “It just took that long to negotiate a deal with our bosses, understandably. CBS really has a new structure and organization, and maybe that’s why it took them so long. But we did achieve something, something that was my pet peeve.”
Why Tom Selleck never got sick of ‘Blue Bloods’

After 14 seasons of a police procedural, material can feel familiar or overdone, but Tom Selleck never had that problem. The actor, who spent 8 years on Magnum, P.I., felt the show and its characters were always changing, thus it never got boring.
“Look, as long as the characters are allowed to grow and change, I think it’s limitless,” Selleck said of the series. “If you do the same story in Season 10 that is very similar to one Donnie [Wahlberg] had in Season 1, it’s going to be a totally different story because Donnie has changed, and Donnie has evolved. That makes it wonderfully limitless in my opinion. We had the same thing on Magnum. I wasn’t ever tired of it.”
When Blue Bloods came to an end, Selleck was very vocal about his disagreement with the network.
“I’m kind of frustrated,” Selleck said. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods, but about it still being wildly successful. My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out.”
Will Tom Selleck ever appear on ‘Boston Blue’?
Since Boston Blue began, following Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg) character, Selleck has been asked a number of times whether he would ever make an appearance. Several Blue Bloods characters have returned, including Len Cariou as Grandpa Reagan and Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan. But Selleck is a bit more hesitant to reprise his role.
“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue. That’s another show,” Selleck said. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan. I can’t predict the future. But I would like to do a comedy because I’ve done a few that were successful.”
