If there’s one thing you can count on from the internet, it’s that it’s going to bring a tear to your eye every now and again — and not always in a bad way. A viral video circulating Reddit depicting a young woman who surprises her father with the news that she donated her kidney to him has been tugging on people’s heartstrings and be warned: you’re going to need a tissue or two.

In the video, Delayne Ivanowski approaches her father resting after a kidney transplant wearing a hospital gown, and upon seeing his daughter, John Ivanowski was immediately brought to tears at the realization that the anonymous donor was his own child.
John was on dialysis four days a week for four to five hours prior to his transplant due to his diagnosis of IgA nephropathy, a form of kidney disease. While he was on a donor waiting list, the reality was that he could have stayed there for years before receiving a donor kidney. While his daughter proposed the idea of giving him her kidney, he shot it down, which is why she chose to go forward with it in secret, surprising him with the information after the fact.
“He likes to walk my dog and run with my dog and he wants to do all this stuff, but now he’s hooked up to a machine,” Delayne told ABC News. “I don’t think that’s any way that anybody should have to live.”
Despite her father being against the idea when she first brought it up, Delayne felt called to go forward with it, regardless of how her father might react.
“I was like, ‘I’m going to do it. I don’t care how mad he is at me. I don’t care if he kicks me out of the house or hates me or doesn’t say a word to me for the rest of my life,'” she told ABC News. “At least he’ll be living a good life and not hooked up to a machine.”
Delayne first shared the video to her TikTok, with text over the post that read, “if 6,000 people venmoed me $1 i could cover the cost for my kidney transplant to my dad!”

While Delayne’s selfless act moved her father, it also moved many on the internet, many commenting on the selfless acts of Delayne, but also acknowledging the way it probably weighed on her father at first.
“The way she cares for him so gently 🥺🥺 Just a reflection of who raised her,” said one Reddit user. “You’re amazing. That’s a lot for dad to process.. we never want our children to sacrifice for us. Bless you both! ❤️❤️,” said someone on TikTok. “February 28th I just celebrated 3 years receiving a kidney from an anonymous living donor! Best gift anyone could receive. You are awesome!! ♻️💚♻️💚,” shared another.
