If you spend the week looking forward to your Saturday or Sunday morning breakfast feasts of pancakes, waffles, bacon, eggs and beyond, it might be time to check your pantry ahead of the weekend morning festivities, especially if you or someone you love suffers from a milk allergy or sensitivity. On January 14, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a limited recall of Quaker’s Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake and Waffle Mix—and a month later, the recall has been elevated to the highest risk level possible. Here, read everything there is to know about this Class 1 recall, how to determine if your purchase is affected by it and what to do if you have this sitting in your pantry.

Why was the Quaker Oats pancake and waffle mix recalled?

The Quaker Oats Company issued this recall back in January when a retail partner alerted them of the presence of undeclared milk in the mix. Though at the time of the original recall there had yet to be any sort of adverse reactions reported due to consumption, the upgrade to a Class 1 recall means the risk of such a thing occurring is now more significant than it had been. If you have a severe dairy allergy, eating this product could have serious repercussions. As described by the FDA, a Class 1 recall is put in place when there is “reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” As far as consumers are aware, there haven’t yet been any reports of such a thing occurring, but remaining vigilant, especially if you have an allergy or sensitivity, is of grave importance.

Dairy allergies and sensitivities can be triggered by consuming this product

In more minor instances, sensitivities to dairy can result in stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, diarrhea or nausea, though most of these can be alleviated with over-the-counter lactase pills that break down the lactose in dairy, over-the-counter gas relief pills, a heating pad or other common stomach-ache remedies. As for those who suffer from extreme dairy allergies, consuming this potentially contaminated product could have much more extreme side effects.

Severe symptoms include vomiting, hives, swelling of the throat and mouth, wheezing, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, even anaphylaxis. According to The Mayo Clinic, behind peanuts and tree nuts, dairy is the third most common cause of this intense and life-threatening reaction.

Are there any other products included in this recall?

In this particular recall, only the Quaker’s Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake and Waffle Mix is affected. Though over the last few years Quaker has issued recalls for products like granola bars and rice crisps, this Class 1 instance pertains only to the pancake mix and should be taken seriously.
