Orange you glad someone invented orange cream? OK, terrible puns aside, this sweet and tangy flavor combo is everywhere this summer. From milkshakes to ice cream, it seems every fast-food joint is jumping on the bandwagon. But here’s a secret: you can create these delicious treats at home. That’s right, I’m talking about refreshing popsicles and boozy cocktails in under 20 minutes. Plus, they’re packed with Vitamin C, perfect for keeping you cool and healthy all summer long. Here’s how to create some orange cream magic.

What is orange cream flavor?

Orange cream is a blend of creamy, citrusy flavors many associate with an orange creamsicle. This iconic flavor first emerged in the early 20th century when the popsicle became a popular dessert. The combination of orange and vanilla was famously popularized by the Creamsicle, introduced by the Popsicle brand in the 1930s (August 13 is National Creamsicle Day!). Since then, the flavor has been synonymous with summertime nostalgia and childhood memories. And now, it’s staging a comeback. From Poppi’s Orange Cream soda to Starbuck’s Orange Cream Cake Pop — this flavor trend is all over social media and stores.

Tips for achieving the perfect orange cream flavor

When it comes to homemade orange cream, you’ll want a good balance of citrus and dairy. Here are some tips for the best flavor in your popsicles and cocktails:

1. Use fresh oranges

For the best orange flavor, use fresh, juicy oranges. Navel oranges are a great choice due to their sweetness and low acidity. Freshly squeezed orange juice will provide a more vibrant and authentic flavor compared to store-bought juice.

2. Choose the right dairy

To achieve a creamy texture, use heavy cream or whole milk in your recipes. For a lighter option, half-and-half can also work well. If you’re making popsicles, mixing Greek yogurt with a bit of cream can add a tangy twist and enhance the creaminess.

3. Incorporate vanilla

A touch of pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste can elevate your orange cream flavor. For cocktails, vanilla-flavored vodka or a splash of vanilla syrup can enhance the creaminess and complement the orange flavor.

I don’t know about you, but I love a dessert cocktail to sip on during summer. And this one is no exception. Think of it like a creamsicle martini. I love how this recipe from Sula and Spice uses whipped vodka, infused with a dried cream powder, for an extra sweet touch. And by all means, use heavy whipping cream as your dairy. Or, stick with milk and add the whipped cream as a garnish.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 3 oz. whipped vodka
  • 2 oz. milk, 2% or skim
  • ¾ oz. orange liqueur

Directions:

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings
  1. Measure all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake to combine. Strain into two martini glasses.
  2. Garnish with whipped cream, orange zest and/or slices as desired.

I think popsicles really are the the ultimate summer dessert. And making them homemade tastes so much better than the store-bought versions. This easy recipe from Eating on a Dime uses just five ingredients, including fresh oranges. Plus, you can adjust the sweetness level. They will last in the freezer for up to six months in an airtight container.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 2 mandarin oranges, peeled
  • 3 white sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 vanilla

Directions:

  • Total Time: 10 minutes, plus freezing
  • Yield: 8-12 servings, depending on molds
  1. Add oranges, orange juice and sugar to a food processor and process for 20 seconds. Add vanilla and whipping cream and process for 60 seconds. If mixture is thick, but not stiff, it’s ready. If runny, process for another 60 seconds.
  2. Spoon into molds (or ice cube trays with popsicle sticks) and freeze four to six hours or overnight. Remove from freezer and let set on the counter for two to five minutes and remove from the mold. If necessary, run the mold under hot water for about 30 seconds to loosen the popsicles.
