‘This Was So Unbelievably Yummy!’ Mauricio Scott’s Smash Burgers Impress Alex Drummond
Alex captured the behind-the-scenes cooking process with easy-to-follow tips
Mauricio Scott is testing out his skills in the kitchen. Recently, the Pioneer Woman’s son-in-law cooked up smash burgers that were a hit for both him and his wife, Alex Drummond Scott. Alex even took to filming the behind-the-scenes, where Mauricio was happily offering step-by-step tips. She also captured a couple of moments with baby Sofia and their first-born fur baby, George. Curious to learn how Mauricio whipped up this “yummy” meal? Keep reading to discover his smash burger secrets, so you can make them, too!
Mauricio Scott’s smash burger method, step-by-step
It seems Scott might have picked up a thing or two from Food Network chef and mother-in-law Ree Drummond. However, Alex quickly pointed out that Mauricio didn’t use a recipe and has actually never made burgers like this before. His cooking setup included a built-in stove-top griddle, a ton of chopped onions, ground beef, seasoning buns and cheese. His tips include the following:
Grill the onions first
Smashburgers typically have a lot of onions, and Scott was prepped and ready with a lot of chopped white ones. “Lay down the onions,” he explained in the video while spreading them out across the griddle. “And then you put the patty over them.”
Smash the patties
This is where the fun happens. To get the burgers nice and thin, you have to smash them before they fully start cooking. “You come in and smash ’em,” he said. While this was his first time making them, he looked like a professional. His tip for non-stick patties? Use a small square of parchment in between the spatula and the meat.
Season the burgers
The best part about this recipe is that the burgers don’t need a ton of spices, so it’s likely you already have them handy. Scott used Lawry’s seasoning salt and black pepper, although Alex requested hers sans pepper.
Add the cheese
As the burgers were cooking, Scott topped them with pepper jack cheese and let it melt into the burgers. Next, was toasting up the buns on the griddle to get them golden brown and a little crispy. Finally, he assembled the burgers by stacking two patties on each bun.
What Baby Sofia and pup George thought of dinner
When Scott put the cheese on the burgers, Alex took a moment to zoom in on Sofia, who was chilling out in her bouncer on the floor. She was awake in horse-patterned pajamas, but didn’t care less about what her dad was doing for dinner.
George, on the other hand, was patiently waiting in the kitchen for any possible scraps. Being the good boy that he is, George was privy to some cheese and got to partake in a small taste test. Scott also indulged in a slice himself and then passed one to George, who ate his piece calmly and quickly.
The final verdict: Would Alex Drummond eat them again?

For his first time making smashburgers, it’s safe to say that the meal was a big hit for Alex. She posted a photo of her and Scott’s plate, with the caption, “This was so unbelievably yummy!!!!” She paired hers with a sauce on top, a side salad and a glass of wine, while Scott topped his burger with jalapenos and enjoyed a beer.
We’ll be excited to see what the Drummond Scott family whips up next, that’s for sure!
