Plus, it’s easy to mix-and-match the ingredients for a treat that’s sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Keep reading to learn how to make s’mores in the microwave as a speedy and flavorful dessert!
The basics of s’mores
The s’mores many of us know and grew up with consist of a warmed marshmallow and piece of chocolate that’s sandwiched between two graham crackers. Marshmallow and chocolate treats have existed for centuries, but the first official recipe for s’mores was reportedly published in a 1927 Girl Scout guidebook. Then called a “some more,” the treat contained the same ingredients found in today’s s’mores. Part of the magic of making s’mores is toasting the marshmallows so they’re soft and fluffy. While this is usually done over an open fire during camping or outdoor gatherings, using your microwave provides a similar effect with less hassle.
Why making s’mores in the microwave is a convenient option
The microwave is your friend when it comes to making s’mores in under a minute. This appliance’s rapid heat distribution works to soften the marshmallow and chocolate without either ingredient burning. Even better, you can microwave a few s’mores at once — which is much easier than assembling each one after the marshmallow is toasted. It’s a simplified version of a nostalgic treat that’s perfect to make when you’re in a pinch.

5 ingredients that will upgrade microwave s’mores
To enhance the flavor of your homemade s’mores, use any of these five ingredients.
1. Chocolate graham crackers
Swap chocolate-flavored graham crackers for the regular variety to add a rich and decadent flavor.
2. Filled marshmallows
For a double dose of chocolate, opt for marshmallows filled with milk chocolate like this variety from Stuffed Puffs as it adds an extra layer of sweetness.
3. Sliced fruit
Just before placing the second graham cracker over the marshmallow, top it with a few strawberry or banana slices for a hint of fruitiness.
4. Nut butter
Smearing peanut or almond butter onto the graham cracker you’ll top the s’more with gives the treat a nutty flavor contrast.
5. Caramel-filled chocolate bar
A chocolate bar filled with caramel provides this dessert classic with a gooier texture and buttery flavor.
