Key Takeaways

  • Disney Cruise Line has set new rules for stateroom door decorations.
  • For years, passengers have decorated their doors with creative and elaborate embellishments.
  • Now, cruisers must follow a specific set of guidelines to avoid damage to doors.

If you’ve ever set sail on a Disney Cruise Line cruise ship, you’ve likely noticed the embellished stateroom doors that line the halls of the ship. If you aren’t a cruise person or weren’t aware of this tradition, families celebrating milestones, enjoying their annual vacation at sea, or certified Disney fanatics will often decorate the doors of their rooms with magnetic signs, streamers and curtains in honor of whatever they might be celebrating—or even to tie in their favorite film or characters.

However, if you plan on hitting the high seas on a Disney cruise any time soon, allow us to update you on Disney Cruise Line’s latest decor policy.

Disney Cruise Line tightens up door decor guidelines

In the past, folks have gone all out with their door decor, but a recent update reflected on the Disney Cruise Line FAQ page has left some passengers deflated. The guidelines are as follows:

  • Door decor should not be affixed using tape, gel adhesives, or any other type of adhesive, as it can cause damage to the door’s finish. Instead, opt for magnetic signage. However, magnets will not stick to Concierge staterooms on the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream due to those doors being made of wood.
  • Decor cannot be hung over the door.
  • Avoid decorating doors with valuables, as Disney Cruise Line cannot be held responsible for any theft or damage.
  • Your door decor cannot include any video or sound elements as it can disrupt other passengers.
  • Decor can only be placed on doors—not on the ceiling or walls of the hallway.

Disney Cruise Line passengers react to new rules

Over the years, families have gotten more and more creative with their stateroom door decor, sharing their designs and displays on social media, but based on Disney’s new guidelines, many of these folks will have to scale their designs back.

One TikTok user, @amandabrown374, showcased her embellishments, tapping into the aesthetics of The Little Mermaid. Another user, @mermay_08, put together an over-the-top Pirates of the Caribbean design. While their innovation is of course impressive, many have shared their thoughts on these new guidelines on Reddit, and the consensus is that it’s for the best.

“This is great for people with mobility devices. Having things on the walls displaces the stateroom attendant carts and takes space out of the hallway for them to pass,” wrote one user. “I hope DCL enforces this rule. It’s getting out of hand and into fire hazard territory with some of these extensive displays,” expressed another.

If you’re bummed about this update, there are plenty of ways to add personality to your stateroom door. Sites like Etsy offer fun magnets you can personalize for your family, and additional decor like streamers can still be used, so long as they’re placed in a way that abides by the new rules.
