Grandson Opens Sweet Letter Grandma Wrote to Him 26 Years Earlier — and We Can’t Stop Crying
When the solar eclipse happened in 1991, Betty decided to reflect on her life in a moving letter to her newborn grandson, Trevor. But before handing off the sweet note, she made his mother vow to keep the letter sealed until the boy was 26 years old.
Now, nearly two decades later, Trevor has finally opened the letter — and lucky for us, he’s decided to share its contents with the rest of the world.
Posting a photo of the letter to Reddit under the username davedavedaveck, he penned: “My nana wrote me a letter in 1991 that I couldn’t open till 2017. The date finally came, and I’ve never felt something so genuine and precious.”
And once read what Betty had to say, you’ll understand why her words were so special.
“I hope I’m around when you open this because I will be/or would have been 79 years old,” she began. “Today we had a total eclipse, and the next one is in the year 2017. So I thought this was such a special day in the first year of you life [sic] that I would make a note of it.”

Of course, she couldn’t help but take the time to fawn over her adorable new grandson: “I wonder what you will be doing at the age of 26??” she contemplated. “I do know that you are the cutest baby ever, and we love you lots.”
And if things couldn’t get any cuter, notice how she cheekily signed the note with a sweet “self-portrait.”
If you couldn’t make it through the rest of the letter without reaching for the box of tissues, you’re not alone. Reddit users have been so moved, they’ve commented on the photo with sweet words and fond memories of their own grandparents.
“Beautiful. Made tears well up. That right there is love,” Reddit user Jobby75B wrote. “Thank you for posting this. Miss my grandparents [sic].”
Trevor also shared that Betty is still alive and will be celebrating her 80th birthday in the fall. We hope she enjoys this year’s lunar’s eclipse as much as she did the last!
