Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but there’s still plenty of time to make plans! The best part? You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy a memorable day, whether you’re treating yourself, celebrating as a family or getting together with someone special. From free movies to store giveaways, we share some of the best ways to spend your holiday on a budget. Keep reading for all the details.

Curl up with free romance books

What better day than February 14 to curl up with a romance? You can download free novels from websites like TryHarlequin.com or ReadDomain.com, which offers a collection of classic romance books available in the public domain. And if you have a library card, you’ve got a treasure trove at your fingertips! Access hundreds of romance books—including the newest releases—all for free from your local library in print, e-book or audiobook versions.

Treat your sweet tooth

Many restaurants offer a free treat when you join their rewards program. Baskin-Robbins gives you an ice cream scoop after your first visit (BaskinRobbins.com/en/mobile-app), Krispy Kreme adds a free doughnut to your order and BJ’s dishes out a complimentary Pizookie when you place your first order.

Make your own Valentine’s Day cards

Valentine’s Day cards can be pricey so many people prefer making their own. You can even use pre-created templates if you want some inspiration. Canva and Adobe Express both offer free card makers with a wide variety of Valentine’s templates. Even better: You can personalize, add photos or text, then print them out or send as an e-card.

Catch a flick at Regal for less

For the entire month of February, Regal Cinemas is showing a different rom-com movie each day as part of its Xoxo promotion–and at a discount! On Valentine’s Day, you can watch Casablanca on the big screen for just $7.99 per ticket. Bonus: If you’re a RCC rewards member, you can also get $3 off any Large ICEE with the purchase of your Xoxo ticket.

Find free or low-cost Valentine’s Day classes near you

Whether you’re planning a day with your love or flying solo, you can find free or low-cost events. Browse MeetUp.com and Yelp.com to find a wide variety of affordable classes perfect for Valentine’s Day. You may be able to attend a wine tasting, dance class or other special activity that’s offering deals for the holiday.

Bring the kids to a free craft event

Looking to celebrate with little ones? Michaels craft stores are offering a fun and free Kids Club event at all locations on February 14! The youngsters can create a heart-shaped keychain with pony beads, a Mardi Gras mask with foam or one of each! All of the supplies are included too, making it a budget-friendly choice. There’s no need to register—just head to your Michaels store by 10 a.m. the day of the event.

Stream romantic movies for free

Enjoy free love-themed films like Sense and Sensibility, A Walk to Remember and Seems Like Old Times right from the comfort of home. Create a free account on TubiTv.com or TheRokuChannel.roku.com to browse their collection of romance films, or catch a flick playing live on PlutoTV.com. For a low-cost movie night treat, grab candy at a dollar store—you won’t need to pay more than a $1 per box!

Turn box-mix desserts into gourmet Valentine’s treats

If you love home-baked goodies, box mixes are an affordable and quick way to treat yourself! You can even give them a gourmet twist by upgrading with other ingredients you already have around the house. One of our favorite ideas: turning box mix brownies in Mocha Brownie Hearts.

To do: Replace the water in your favorite brownie mix with an equal amount of brewed coffee, then bake as directed. Once cool, use a cookie cutter to cut the treats into hearts. Garnish with chocolate sauce and peanuts if desired. The coffee adds deliciously rich and decadent mocha flavor!

Host a karaoke night at home

You don’t have to head to a karaoke bar to sing along to your favorite tunes together. Enjoy the experience from your living room with the help of YouTube. You’ll find tons of singalong karaoke videos on channels like “@singkingkaraoke” and you can choose songs from Frank Sinatra, Britney Spears and even Disney movies.

Decorate cookies with affordable kits

Not a fan of baking? Jump right ahead to the fun part with cookie decorating kits! You can find festive options at stores like Target, Walmart and Five Below to make for a memorable Valentine’s Day or Galentine’s Day. Best of all: Each one is under $10!

Plan a budget-friendly game night

Another idea for low-cost entertainment: Play a board or card game together! There are more than 40 different games you can play with a single deck of cards, from Rummy to Nertz. If you’re looking for something with a digital spin, Netflix also offers party games like Pictionary: Game Night if you already have a subscription. Select the game you want to play, click “Play Game,” and you will be instructed to scan the QR code on the screen to turn your smartphone into a game controller.

Don’t miss these Valentine’s Day store giveaways

Some of your favorite retailers are also going all out for the holiday—which means freebies for you! Lowe’s, for example, is giving out complimentary wooden roses to a select number of rewards members, while Target is hosting a Valentine’s Mix & Match event to hand out sweet samples and giveaways. Pet parents won’t want to miss the free Valentine’s Day party at PetSmart stores, where you’ll find free treats, paw print cards and adorable photo ops.

This Valentine’s Day, remember that the most meaningful celebrations don’t come with a big price tag—they come from the heart.
