Decorating for the holidays this year became a bit more complicated with the recent recall of tree light controllers.
Ho ho, oh no! Christmas decorators have to be extra careful this year when it comes to putting up strings of lights this holiday season. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a special recall on decorative tree light controllers sold across the nation at several retailers. Read to learn more about why these products have been recalled and how you can safely deck the halls this December.
CPSC issues ‘Fast Track’ recall on decorative tree light controllers

On Dec. 12, CPSC issued a ‘Fast Track Recall’ on over 44,000 Wireless Decorative Tree Light Controllers, sold at well-known retailers such as Walmart and Target, due to fire hazard concerns.
The recalled Wireless Decorative Tree Light Controllers are made and distributed by Mr. Christmas, a holiday innovation company based in Memphis, TN.
The tree light controllers work via a wireless receiver that plugs into an outlet. According to the recall report, the product can easily overheat, posing a fire hazard for users.
The official CPSC recall was announced following 10 reports of the light controllers overheating, including one fire. No customers have reported injuries associated with the controllers overheating.
According to the CPSC website, a ‘Fast Track Recall’ is a voluntary procedure that enables businesses to quickly remove potentially dangerous products from the marketplace.
The benefits of the Fast Track Recall include faster issue resolution, reduced liability on the company’s behalf and added support from a government organization like CPSC.
How to check if you purchased a recalled decorative tree light controller?

The Mr. Christmas light controllers are sold at Walmart, Cracker Barrel and Target.
Walmart and Cracker Barrel’s version of the controller is shaped like a green, red and white peppermint candy with a candy cane on/off lever, and displays the words “Christmas Light Controller”.
The controller sold at Target is sold under the Wondershop™ brand. This version of the product is shaped like a square on/off switch box with green, red and white balls, with the words “Tree Lighting Switch” displayed.
The potential fire hazard associated with the light controllers is directly associated with the white wireless receptacle that is plugged into an outlet.
This receptacle shows the words “Mr. Christmas” and has one of these three model numbers printed on its exterior: 39611, 39612 or 39630.
What to do if you purchased a recalled decorative tree light controller?

If you discover that you have purchased a recalled Mr. Christmas light controller, there are certain steps that the CPSC encourages customers to take.
According to the recall report, customers should, “immediately stop using this product and return it to their place of purchase to receive a full refund.”
Due to the risk of overheating and potential fire hazards, it is advised that customers remove the product from its power source and any flammable items as soon as possible to keep their family safe.
