Key Takeaways

  • A 9-year-old Texas boy donated all $200 of his birthday savings to fight local hunger.
  • His generous gift inspired online donations, providing over 16,000 meals to families.
  • Hudson’s act sparked giving as far away as Alaska, proving one child can make a difference.

When 9-year-old Hudson LeBlanc donated his birthday funds to feed hungry neighbors, strangers joined in, starting a massive wave of kindness. Here, he shares his story with Woman’s World.

While celebrating his 9th birthday at a buffet restaurant, Hudson LeBlanc suddenly asked a question that took his mother, Melisa, by surprise.

“Mommy, are there people here in Lindale who don’t have food to eat?”

She paused, knowing she had to be honest. “Yes, buddy, there are. What made you think of that?”

“I was thinking about how much food we have while other people might not have enough,” he explained.

His mother then suggested they make a donation to the East Texas Food Bank in honor of his birthday. He was already aware of the work they do because every November his Cub Scout pack participates in Scouting for Food, where they collect canned food and donations.

“How much money have I saved?” Hudson asked.

Melisa mentally added up his birthday money, allowance and chore money. “Almost $200. How much would you like to give?”

A wide grin spread across the little boy’s face. “All of it!” he answered without hesitation.

A birthday boy’s mission

Excited, Hudson called his Aunt Hannah, who works at the food bank, and let her know he was coming to donate.

Once he did, she gave him a hug and told him his gift would provide almost 1,000 meals.

Touched beyond words, Melisa shared her son’s story on Facebook in hopes it would encourage others to help.

On the first night, they received a $100 donation. Hudson set his hopes on it doubling overnight, but he was totally shocked when the next day, he received $1,400.

Donations kept pouring in from friends, family and strangers. Even a friend of Melisa’s in Fairbanks, Alaska, donated to their local food bank after hearing Hudson’s story.

Filling bellies, touching hearts

Today, Hudson has collected $3,216 through the official Facebook fundraiser, which has provided 16,080 meals, but countless others have donated directly to the food bank to support his mission.

“I could not be prouder to be his aunt,” Hannah Walker Harris shares. “To have someone from my own family step into this mission to fight hunger is such an honor.”

Hudson’s mother beams with pride as well. “If one little boy’s willingness to give away $200 could inspire thousands of dollars in donations, imagine what could happen if we all looked for opportunities to love our neighbors,” she says.

“Someone who’s hungry needs help now,” urges Hudson. “Feeding them is what makes me really happy.”
