Years ago, when my son was young and I was a single mom, a woman in my community sponsored a special evening out for hardworking single moms.

The gathering occurred in a local historic theater. A few hundred of us gathered to watch a variety of fun, lighthearted entertainment. Firefighters from the neighborhood handed out gifts, a talented musician played his electric violin.

Later on after his performance, a firefighter handed me a CD of the violinist’s music. By the end of the evening, I felt like I was walking on air, filled with gratitude when I got in my car to return home to my son.

Moments later, as I drove away in my car, I stopped at a red light at the intersection outside the theater. I was the first and only car that was stopped—which, now that I reflect on it, is very odd because there were several hundred women in that theater. There should have been a line of cars waiting behind me.

While waiting for the light to change, a small, knowing tug on the edge of my fingernail told me I probably snagged something. Sure enough, I glanced down at my pinky finger and saw I had a hangnail.

The light turned green. I glanced in my rearview mirror to make sure there were no cars. There weren’t. So, I quickly pulled a nail file from my purse and began to work on the hangnail.

Just then, a massive black pickup truck barreled from the south side of the intersection through the red light. That truck would have hit my driver’s side door. I would not have made it back home to my son if that “hangnail angel” had not yanked my pinky fingernail.

Now, whenever I get a hangnail, I think of that angel and become more aware of my surroundings. After all, that hangnail angel might very well be trying to save my life once again!
