Thinning hair is a problem many of us experience as we get older. It can happen for many reasons from genetics to hormonal changes. While we don’t have control over these aspects of our health, we can alter our haircare routine, which typically needs to change as we age. In particular, experts say that using the wrong products, especially hair gel, could be causing serious damage to our mane.
What’s the deal with hair gel?
If you use hair gel to achieved that slicked-back look when throwing your hair into an up-do or just to keep things in place and control frizz, you may want to rethink it. In fact, some experts say that using hair gel could actually be causing damage not only to the hair itself, but also to your scalp.
“Using hair gel to slick the front of the hair is something you want to avoid — especially if you suffer from hair fall in the front of your head or temple area,” hair expert Ghanima Abdullah told SheFinds. This is because hair gel can clog hair follicles, causing your strands to fall out. “Slathering sticky chemicals onto the scalp means that same stickiness enters the hair follicles. This can cause hair to fall and give it real problems when it’s time for new hair to exit the hair follicles.”
Not only that, but most commercial hair gels are loaded with chemicals — called sulfates and parabens — that are bad for your hair and your health. “Sulfates are commonly used in dishwashing soap and paint remover. This harmful chemical can penetrate the skin barrier and degenerate cell membranes and proteins on your scalp,” beauty expert Adina Mahalli explained to SheFinds. “Parabens have also been known as endocrine disruptors, meaning they interfere with your hormonal system, leading to hair thinning.” Yikes!
So if you’re using hair gel to achieve any of your favorite looks, consider a few alternative options. Instead, try gentler options like hair styling creams, pastes, or pomade which can offer the same hold for frizzy flyaways. You can even reach for all-natural coconut oil to help tame frizz, just be sure to use a small amount to prevent your hair from looking greasy. And of course, be sure to check your product labels to make sure that everything you’re using is paraben and sulfate free. I love this paraben-free styling cream and deep conditioner from Argan Magic (Buy on Amazon, $12.95).
