5 After-Summer DIY Skincare Remedies to Transition to Fall

Tags:

We all enjoyed reveling in the summer sun, but all that time spent soaking up rays has undoubtedly affected our sensitive skin. Now that fall is officially here, it’s time to give your skin a little post-summer rehab. With a little help from ingredients already lining your medicine cabinet, these DIY remedies are the rejuvenating boost your skin needs. Keep scrolling for five spa-inspired natural remedies shown reverse sun damage to refresh skin and hair in a flash.

Smooth crepey skin with an apricot mask

Apricots’ high vitamin A content helps boost the production of skin-firming collagen (which can be broken down by UV rays) for tauter-looking skin, says dermatologist Debra Jaliman, M.D. Add brown sugar (it increases cell turnover) and egg whites (they tighten skin) to speed results.

TRY IT: Mix 2 tsp.of mashed apricots, 1 Tbs.of brown sugar and 1 tsp.of egg whites. Rub onto skin and let sit 15 minutes; rinse.

Calm redness with a pomegranate mist

Antioxidants in the fruit reduce redness causing inflammation, and mixed with irritation-soothing aloe vera, it makes skin soft, bright and even-toned in no time.

TRY IT!: Add 1⁄2 cup of pomegranate juice, 1⁄2 cup of water and 1⁄4 cup of aloe vera gel to a spray bottle. Spritz as needed.

Restore lock luster with an avocado conditioner

Avocado’s nourishing fatty acids moisturize sun-parched, straw-like strands from the inside out, while its amino acids fortify hair’s cuticle to help lock in that hydration. And pairing the fruit with olive oil enhances light-reflecting shine, adding depth and dimension for instantly thicker-looking tresses!

TRY IT!: Mash half of an avocado and combine with 2 Tbs.of olive oil. Work through damp hair from roots to ends. Cover with a shower cap and let sit for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Erase age spots with a lemon + yogurt “cream”

Just one season’s worth of sun exposure can put the production of melanin (skin’s pigment) into overdrive, causing hyperpigmentation on the face, neck, chest and hands. Dr. Jaliman’s fix? A lemon-yogurt combo. “The fruit’s citric acid and vitamin C act like a mild bleach to help lighten dark spots, while exfoliating yogurt dissolves dead cells to quickly reveal the brighter skin underneath.

TRY IT: Mix 1 Tbs.of plain yogurt and 1 tsp.of lemon juice. Dab onto dark spots and let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.

Soften dry patches with a coconut + sugar body polish

Sugar’s granules and glycolic acid slough away the rough top layers of skin while coconut oil moisturizes, reversing the drying effects of summer elements like sun, saltwater and chlorine, says Dr. Jaliman.

TRY IT: Mix 1⁄4 cup of sugar with 1⁄4 cup of liquefied coconut oil. Then, in the shower, rub onto damp skin from the shoulders down; rinse.
