Princess Diana Gave William Some Serious Advice on His First Day of School

Princess Charlotte recently left her nursery school days behind to join her brother at George at Thomas’s Battersea Day School in London. The pair looked adorable as they posed together in front of the school in their navy blue uniforms — and we couldn’t help but be reminded of their dad, Prince William, doing the same back in 1987.

Just like the latest little royals making their way to school, William was escorted by both parents on his first day. According to Mirror, Princess Diana offered young William a bit of advice as they drove to class that morning. Former royal bodyguard Ken Wharfe revealed, “Diana said to him in the car, ‘When you get to school, there are going to be lots of media and lots of photographers. You’ve got to behave yourself. You’re going to get this for the rest of your life.’” We’ve all definitely seen her words ring true over the years with cameras following William and the whole royal family everywhere they go.

At just five years old, however, William was already trying to put distance between himself and the media. After getting out of the car, “William turned around and said something extraordinary,” Wharfe explained. “He said: ‘I don’t like ‘tographers.” The young future king’s attitude seems to have continued as he has grown up and no raising the next generation of heirs to the throne. Unlike the hoards of photographers there for young William, Charlotte and George only had a handful of reporters clicking away.

We can’t imagine what it would feel like to constantly be in the public eye, especially at such a young age. As much as we love seeing cute new photos of the youngest royals, we’re glad the family also focuses on protecting them from getting overwhelmed.

After all, even if their great-grandmother happens to be the Queen of England, George and Charlotte are still just regular kids at heart!
