If you’re planning on building a home gym, consider adding one of the best treadmills under $1,000 to your must-have list. Whether weight loss is your goal or you want to increase activity, this fitness staple is worth making room for. And fortunately, many don’t actually take up much space.

Of all the pieces of exercise equipment in the world, treadmills are my favorite. As an avid runner and power walker, I can attest to how awesome it is to own one. They’re great for cardiovascular health, and if you crank up the incline, they build muscle strength. If you’ve ever wondered why all the treadmills are in use when you go to the gym, that’s the reason.

Living in New York where winters are fierce, I discovered early the benefit of owning a treadmill. Having one in the corner of my living room not only allowed me to work out when the roads were too icy to get outside, but made it easy to always squeeze a workout in — and after the pandemic, most of us realize the convenience of exercising at home.

Although some machines can cost up to $3,000, there are dozens of quality treadmills for less. And just like the expensive ones, they include heart rate monitors, LCD displays, USB ports, and can even fold. Keep reading to see our favorites!

Best Treadmills Under $1,000 Deals:

What are the best treadmills under $1000

What is the best treadmill for home use under $1000?

My personal favorite treadmill for home use comes from Sole — and yes, it’s under $1,000! The Sole F63 Treadmill has a large LCD screen, inclines 15 levels, and offers a smooth workout experience for those concerned about their knees. Although it retails for $1,799, it’s currently on sale, and worth grabbing while you can.

Many people assume there’s a direct correlation between treadmill quality and price, but that’s not true. In fact, there are many affordable treadmills on the market. For example, the Norditrack T Treadmill Series starts at $649. It features a wide belt, one-touch speed control, and folds. It has a self-cooling motor, and cushioning beneath the belt for shock absorption.

Although some treadmills — like the ones you’ll find at a gym — cost close to $3,000, a good quality treadmill can cost far less. Instead of price, consider these factors when determining treadmill quality:

  • Belt size: If you want a treadmill for running, look for machines with a belt 22 inches wide or more. This gives you extra space if you lose your stride or like performing side runs. If walking is more of your speed, a belt of 20 inches or so will be fine.
  • Motor: The motor’s horsepower will impact how smooth a treadmill feels. For walkers, look for something with a continuous horsepower (CHP) of 2.0. For runners (and joggers too), a treadmill with a CHP of 2.5 or more is best.
  • Accessories: Similar to cars, treadmills become more expensive when they’re bigger and have a fancier dashboard. Treadmills with touchscreens, for example, can average $1,700. However, if you don’t need a smart treadmill, you’ll be happy to know that the best treadmills under $1,000 still come with cool features like heart monitors, built-in fitness programs, and progress trackers.
  • Weight: Heavier treadmills that have a higher weight capacity (250 pounds to 300 pounds) tend to be more durable — always an important factor when selecting your machine.
  • Movability: If you have joint pain or want to switch up your workout locations, treadmills with wheels or that have a slimmer build, like the GoPlus 2 in 1 Folding Treadmill, are the way to go. It’s only 70 pounds, but can hold a person of 265 pounds, and has 2.25 CHP motor.

When searching the best treadmills under $1,000, you’ll also want to consider your workout space. If you have a room dedicated to a home gym, you’ll be able to enjoy a bigger model, like the Horizon Fitness 7.0 Treadmill. If you want something that can be placed in the corner, and then taken out for use while you’re watching TV (my favorite way to work out), try something like the BiFanuo 2 in 1 Folding Treadmill. It folds, and is slim enough to fit under the couch. It’s also only $369!

Who has the best prices for treadmills?

One of the best places to buy a treadmill online is Amazon. For one thing, the retailer has an awesome selection of fitness equipment, and there is always something on sale. Secondly, they often offer free shipping, which can save you an additional $100. They also make it easy to work with sellers for returns and replacements.

Another place to find some of the best treadmills under $1,000 is Walmart. They’re currently selling the Echelon Stride Sport Auto-Fold Compact Treadmill for $571. It includes two water bottle holders, a tablet holder, and can be folded down to fit beneath your bed or couch.

Which brand treadmill is best for home use?

There are a lot of good treadmill brands available for home use, so it really depends on what you’re looking for. As you may already know, Horizon Fitness is an excellent treadmill brand, and their T101 Foldable Treadmill ($796) is wonderful for both running, and walking. Its deck has responsive cushion, there’s a USB port in the console, and the machine is foldable.

If you prefer a small model, you may like treadmills from Sunny Fitness and Health. The brand’s SF-T4400 Treadmill ($383) is only 49 inches in length, also folds, and includes nine fitness programs to choose from. And with more than 8,000 reviews on Amazon, you know it’s one of the best treadmills under $1,000.

Whether you’re an avid walker and searching the best treadmills for walking seniors or rather stick with one of the best folding treadmills for small spaces or a mini treadmill there are dozens of options and brands.

Do treadmills damage floors?

Even the best lightweight treadmills are on the heavier side, so it makes sense you’d be concerned about floor damage. Although I’ve never experienced damage to my hardwood floors with the exception of a few scuff marks, some treadmill users report indentations to their carpets. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution: a treadmill mat.

Many manufacturers suggest using a treadmill mat beneath heavy fitness equipment. They’re made with high density plastic material and keep the treadmill from having direct contact to a surface. I like this treadmill mat from Amazon ($40.24), because it’s thick, and comes in a variety of sizes.
