Whether it’s hot or chilled, we can all agree that there’s something comforting about drinking a cup of tea. Plus, it can boost our health in so many ways. If you’re looking to switch up your regular brew, rose hip tea might be for you. Among its many health benefits are reduced aches and pains, lower heart disease risk, and weight loss.

This vibrant red tea is made from rosehips, a fruit grown from wild rose blossoms called Rosa canina that’s native to much of Europe and parts of Africa and Asia. Rosehips can be consumed in many ways. For tea, they are dried and crushed into a fine powder.

A study published in the journal Australian Family Physician noted that rosehip fruit is packed with vitamin C and anti-inflammatory compounds like galactolipids. Researchers credited these properties with soothing osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease in participants after taking 2.5 grams of rosehip powder daily for three months.

Drinking rosehip tea has an additional benefit to boost heart health. Research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences found that consuming rosehip extract was linked to reduced plasma triglyceride and free fatty acid levels in mice thanks to the fruit’s natural anti-lipidemic effect. Essentially, it decreased cholesterol, which lowered the heart disease risk of the study’s participants.

Adding this drink to your diet might also help you shed a few extra pounds. A study published in Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity: Targets and Therapy looked at the obesity-fighting effects of consuming rosehips every day for 12 weeks. The study’s authors found that participants burned fat more efficiently and lost weight thanks to a metabolism-revving flavonoid called tiliroside.

You can buy bags of this tea at health stores or online (Buy on Amazon, $8.99). It’s known for having a gentle floral flavor with a tart aftertaste, so adding a smidge of honey helps to balance it out. From there, all there’s left to do is sip and enjoy.
