Hearty and Comforting Skillet Shepherd’s Pie Recipe Is a Tasty Take on a Comfort Classic

Fresh dill gives this warming meal a bright pop

Shepherd’s pie, a classic dish that originated in the British Isles has been around for centuries. Traditionally, minced lamb or beef was combined with gravy and vegetables then topped with mashed potatoes and baked. Many consider it a national dish. Today it is popular around the work. It’s one of my favorite comfort foods. And it’s easy to customize. That’s what inspired this Skillet Shepherd’s Pie recipe. Only we make it just a tad healthier.

We sub in turnips for some of the potatoes. They deliver a healthy dose of fiber and peppery finish to the buttery spuds. Instead of beef or lamb, we opt for lean ground turkey. Its mild flavor is perfect for soaking up the rich gravy. To keep prep and cleanup simple we brown the meat in an oven-proof skillet with frozen mixed veggies, top with the potato mixture and cheese, then broil until golden. Cook along with our video, then leave us a comment.
