Shoppers are hunting for affordable scent options as fragrance trends explode on TikTok, and dollar stores have become an unexpected stop for body mists and perfumes under $5.
Why is scent trending right now on TikTok and social media?
Fragrance is having a moment because social platforms turned scent into a storytelling category, even though shoppers can’t smell through a screen. Faye Brookman, writing for the US Chamber, notes that “TikTok paved the path for fragrances to gain traction even if consumers couldn’t sniff them. The hashtag #PerfumeTok provided a platform for posters to describe scents.”
That visibility has translated into real sales. Brookman writes that TikTok Shop “has surpassed more than $100 million in sales over the past few years, according to NIQ’s Mayo,” giving smaller brands a direct path to shoppers without traditional retail distribution.
The emotional pull matters too. Matthieu Befve, head of fine fragrance at Givaudan North America, told Cosmopolitan that “scent has become an emotional anchor, a tool for self-expression, comfort and connection in an increasingly sensory-driven world.”
Are cheap Dollar Store fragrances actually worth buying?
A good body mist or perfume doesn’t have to be expensive to smell good, and much of what you pay for at the high end is the bottle, not the juice inside.
Fragrance expert Aimee Majoros, author of Aimee Is Beauty, told Real Simple that “packaging is another huge factor where [manufacturers] cut costs. There are a lot of cheaper scents that I really love, but after having them for time you will notice that the gold of the cap is not solid and is peeling off. A more expensive fragrance … will not have this problem, but they have spent more on the packaging.”
