Designers Behind Viral Dagne Dover Tote Reveal What Makes a Cult-Favorite Bag: ‘A Handbag Should Perform as Well as It Looks’ (Exclusive)

How a smart airport insight sparked the rise of the Dagne Dover tote—plus how to choose the best everyday bag for your body

If you’ve stood in an airport security line this holiday week, you’ve probably seen a fair few tote bags slung over shoulders, and it’s likely more than one of them was a Dagne Dover. Like the humble tote bag in general, the once online-only functional bag is having a moment and now pops up in blockbuster films, hit TV shows and on the arms of busy women everywhere. But it didn’t stumble into popularity. The lifestyle brand powered through the market noise and earned its status as a favorite, go-to tote.

The story behind the Dagne Dover tote phenomenon

Before Dagne became the cult favorite, its roots began in an airport terminal. Dagne’s cofounder and CEO, Melissa Mash, ran Coach’s first UK store in Heathrow Terminal 5 and spoke directly with thousands of customers each week. She noticed how frustrated travelers became when their luxury bags looked pretty on the outside but were impractical in daily use.

Work totes were stiff, heavy or poorly designed. She noticed a growing desire for lightweight bags without flashy logos, made for real life, not a showroom.

When Mash reconnected with her friend Deepa Gandhi, COO, who also worked in the retail industry, the two realized they shared the same frustration: the industry wasn’t designing for how modern women actually lived.

Jessy Dover, the creative director, had won the Coach Design competition as a student at Parsons. Here she met Mash, who was impressed with her design sensibility, which became the missing piece that Mash and Gandhi were looking for to complete the brand vision.

The three founders’ strengths were naturally complementary: one deeply creative, one deeply operational, one deeply consumer-focused. The trio formalized their partnership and began conducting focus groups, which helped them map out the first two products: the Legend tote and the original clutch wallet.

Dagne Dover launched as an e-commerce brand, which allowed them to speak directly to the women whose frustrations inspired the brand in the first place.

From the beginning, they shared a philosophy: a handbag should perform as well as it looks.

Ghandi shares, “Intentional design and functionality are rooted in everything that we do, and with that as our north star, we’ve made sure that we’re not just putting more out into the world, but that each new style has an additive purpose to our customers’ lives.”

How to choose the right everyday bag for your body

Everyone loves a good tote, but a truly useful bag goes beyond looking pretty. A tote only works if it works for your body. Dover shares, “The right fit makes all the difference. Shoulder shape, torso length and how the bag sits against your frame determine whether it feels effortless or frustrating.”

No matter the bag you’re looking to buy—whether it’s a designer cult bag or from Costco—few simple cues to guide your choice:

  • Broad or square shoulders naturally support a tote or shoulder bag, helping it stay in place.
  • Sloped shoulders often struggle with falling straps, making a backpack or messenger bag a more comfortable option.
  • Strap drop matters! Your bag should tuck neatly under your arm and rest against your waist, rather than bouncing at your hip.

“You really want your bag to fit into your body ergonomically,” the creative director stated.

The most durable materials for everyday totes

A tote is only as good as the material it’s made from, and durability starts with choosing fabrics that can survive real life. As Dover explains, “If you’re looking for something to last you a long time, I would go with leather or nylon.”

The right material determines how well it holds up to weather, weight and daily wear:

  • Pebbled, treated leather resists scratches and moisture, and often softens over time without losing structure.
  • High-density nylon is designed for rough handling, travel and years of tossing, packing and commuting.
  • Neoprene, while lightweight and stylish, is more delicate and usually lasts 1–2 years with heavy use.

Proper care extends the life of any tote. Keeping bags stuffed and stored correctly helps maintain their shape and structure in the long term.
