Shoppers Are Racing to TJ Maxx for a VHS-Inspired Candle—Here’s The $6 Video Store Candle Dupe
Find out why the nostalgic VHS candle is sparking a frenzy, plus a great dupe to buy online
These days most of us subscribe to streaming services to enjoy movies, but there’s something nostalgic about those old VHS tapes we used to watch. The appreciation for the throwback media format is likely what inspired a VHS candle at TJ Maxx that shoppers can’t resist. Find out more about the now-viral VHS candle, plus the affordable Video Store candle dupe you may love just as much.
What is the viral VHS candle everyone’s talking about?
It’s not uncommon for people to get sentimental for their childhood around Halloween, which is likely what has prompted serious interest in a new seasonal item: a VHS candle. The item, made by DW Home Candles, features three stacked “VHS” tapes, showcasing the fictional Halloween movies Vampires in the Attic, Clowns on Campus and The Tutor of Terror. Together there’s no doubt that they make the perfect spooky season display.
But it’s not just the clever VHS tapes that make the candle so appealing. It happens to smell great, too. “The scent notes for this one are vanilla, caramel and buttery popcorn, which to me just further pushed that nostalgia feel as if you were eating candy and popcorn while watching a scary movie,” says Vanessa Goodwin, who shares seasonal finds on Hearts and Haunts.
Once news of the VHS “movie night” candle began circulating online, people everywhere eagerly began the hunt to find one for themselves.
What people are saying about the VHS candle
The viral candle was discovered at TJ Maxx, and customers have been flocking to the store ever since autumn merchandise hit the shelves.

“I’ve been HUNTING for it,” one TikTok user replied in early August in the video above.
“It’s not in any of mine,” commented another, who couldn’t locate the candle at local stores.
Goodwin first learned about the candle via a Facebook post, and says it took her about three weeks to find one.
The hunt continues for many others, however, with people taking to social media to share when they find it. Several TikTok users have posted videos with captions like: “I finally found the viral VHS candle” to give others a bit of hope.
Tips for tracking down the viral candle before it’s gone

“My advice for anyone trying to find it is to make sure that you are going to TJ Maxx and Marshalls because they both are selling this candle,” Goodwin shares. “Make sure to check the Halloween section, the checkout lane and also the regular candle section because that’s where I saw it!”

The best video store candle dupe you can order online
If you can’t find the viral candle for yourself or if you care more about the scent than the vintage look, there’s an affordable alternative out there. The company Dio Candle sells a nostalgic “Video Store Candle.”

The label is equally fun, with “Video Store” printed in a way that mimics the now-defunct Blockbuster video store chain.
The Video Store candle is currently available in several different sizes:
