After years of struggling with hair loss, Mangala Rao, 50, felt like she was at her wits’ end. When both standard over-the-counter treatments to promote hair growth and promising home remedies failed, Mangala started to worry she’d never be able to stop the shedding. That is, until she stumbled upon a traditional Ayurvedic hair oil that finally worked. The result: noticeably thicker, healthier hair. Learn how she used this age-old remedy to transform her hair health (and confidence!), and how you can get the benefits of natural treatments to stimulate hair growth.

Mangala’s hair loss had steadily worsened

How is this happening to me? Mangala thought as she pulled her hair back and looked in the mirror. Her hairline looked thinner than ever, and she’d been noticing more strands in the shower every day. This looks even worse than usual! she fretted.

Mangala tried weekly oiling with a homemade blend of castor and coconut oils and minoxidil, which left her scalp inflamed and itchy, but nothing worked. After a year of watching her hair become thinner and thinner, she felt like she’d exhausted all her options. I have to find a way to reverse this, she despaired. What are your biggest hair health worries lately?

Tapping into the power of Ayurveda

Later, on a trip to the Himalayas to scatter her father’s ashes, Mangala spent a week at a healing retreat specializing in Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine that focuses on balancing the mind, body and spirit. There, she learned that hair loss could be triggered by synthetic fragrances or chemicals in conventional shampoos that can inflame the scalp and irritate follicles. Ayurvedic practitioners created a nourishing hair oil with ashwagandha, fermented rice water and rosemary oil and applied it to Mangala’s scalp daily. She learned that ashwagandha helps modulate stress and hormone levels, fermented rice water repairs and nourishes the skin and rosemary oil stimulates follicles while protecting strands to help prevent hair fall. Used together, they strengthen the scalp barrier and improve hair density.

The Ayurvedic hair oil worked wonders

After 12 weeks of using the Ayurvedic oil treatment for hair loss, Mangala saw a dramatic improvement in her hair thickness. I can’t believe this—I must share this secret with other women! she thought.

Over the next three years, Mangala researched, developed and launched her own line of haircare products called Chasma Skin. She was especially excited to share her Luscious Locks Hair Serum, which combines the Himalayan Ayurvedic trio with Stimucap, a peptide and vitamin B6 complex that enhances follicle microcirculation and prolongs the anagen (growth) phase—essentially a drug-free alternative to minoxidil.

Since 2019, Mangala has used the serum daily, seeing steady regrowth, stronger strands and reduced shedding. “People are constantly asking me what I do for my skin and hair,” she says with a smile. “My hair is fuller and healthier than it ever has been, and I am happy I can help women get the same results naturally!”

More natural hair loss remedies

Aside from trying Mangala’s Ayurvedic haircare oil to reverse shedding, consider these effective options:

Peppermint oil

Massaging a balm containing just three percent peppermint oil into the scalp daily for a month can boost hair regrowth by an impressive 92 percent, according to a study published in the journal Toxicological Research.

Rosemary oil

A study published in the journal SkinMed found that applying rosemary oil to the scalp twice a day for six months sparked noticeable hair growth in thinning areas by improving blood circulation and stimulating hair follicles.

Onion juice

It may sound strange, but people with patchy hair loss who applied fresh onion juice to bald spots twice daily for eight weeks experienced significant hair regrowth, according to a study in The Journal of Dermatology.
