7 Benefits of Sleeping Naked After 50, From Weight Loss To Fewer Night Sweats
Science shows ditching PJs transforms sleep, metabolism and intimacy
Who knew that something as simple as skipping pajamas could dramatically improve sleep quality, mood, menopause symptoms and even metabolism? But only about 9 percent of Americans go to bed in the buff, according to a survey from NapLab. If you’re still buttoned-up for bedtime, you might be missing out on some surprising wellness perks. So tuck in. We’re about to strip away the secrets and reveal the health benefits of sleeping naked.
7 surprising health benefits of sleeping naked
Here’s the beautiful part: Sleeping in your birthday suit doesn’t just impact your night, it transforms your day too. Here are some of the top benefits of sleeping naked:
Deeper sleep
Here’s what science tells us: Cooling the body is key to helping the brain transition into deeper sleep stages that lead to truly restorative sleep. The ideal bedroom temperature is estimated between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. And removing heat-trapping clothing can help you stay cool and support the kind of temperature regulation your body needs to drift off to dreamland.
“Sleeping naked allows your body to cool down to the optimal sleep temperature more easily,” confirms Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, an energy and sleep expert. On the flip side, one study showed warmer sleeping environments, like when we’re bundled up, boosted wakefulness and lowered our ideal slow-wave (deep) and REM (dream) sleep stages.
Fewer menopausal symptoms
Sleeping nude can also reduce disruptive symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats that commonly plague women at midlife. “During menopause, hormones fluctuate and disrupt the body’s regulatory system, which is what causes night sweats and hot flashes,” explains Shelby Harris PsyD, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist. “Clothing can sometimes trap heat and moisture. When you sleep naked, or at least wear minimal layers, the body can let go of that heat it’s holding onto more efficiently and lead to fewer awakenings and more restorative rest.”
Easier weight loss
Here’s an empowering discovery: “Sleeping naked makes it easier to lose weight,” reveals Dr. Teitelbaum. How? “Because your body is cooler during naked sleep, it has to burn more calories to maintain body temperature.” Scientists call this process activating your brown fat—special fat cells that burn calories to generate warmth and regulate your body temperature.
That’s not all. “Increased deep sleep from optimal body temperature contributes to an increase in growth hormone, also known as the fountain of youth hormone,” Dr. Teitelbaum adds. “It also helps the hormones that suppress appetite.” How much weight are we talking about? Dr. Teitelbaum says, “Good quality sleep is associated with an average 6.5-pound weight loss.”
Healthier skin
A breathable sleep environment reduces moisture buildup, which means less sweat and fewer breakouts. “Skin health can benefit, since less restriction allows better airflow and may reduce clogged pores or body acne along areas where elastic waistbands or tight fabrics sit,” adds Dr. Harris.
Fewer yeast infections
Another benefit of sleeping naked? Fewer gynecological concerns, such as yeast infections. “By increasing air circulation in the groin area, the area is less likely to get sweaty [like it might with tight underwear], with the unhealthy moisture buildup that contributes to yeast overgrowth,” Dr. Teitelbaum says.
Improved mood and energy
“Sleeping naked can improve mood and energy simply by improving sleep continuity,” says Harris. “When you fall asleep faster and wake up less often, you spend more time in deep and REM sleep, which are critical for emotional regulation, cognitive sharpness and physical recovery.”
Harris adds, “Better sleep means lower cortisol levels, more stable blood sugar overnight, and improved hormone balance overall. All of that shows up the next day as clearer thinking, more patience, steadier energy and fewer mood swings.”
Better intimacy
“Some women report feeling more comfortable in their bodies, which can subtly improve body image and intimacy,” says Harris, a welcome benefit of sleeping naked.
Dr. Teitelbaum adds, “Sleeping naked increases the likelihood of skin-to-skin contact with your bed partner, which stimulates oxytocin release.” Often called the love chemical, this is the hormone that increases the sense of intimacy in relationships and can support emotional bonding.
One Reddit user who is a fan of naked sleeping summed it up this way: “Naked cuddles are nicer.”
Plus, there are practical perks too: You’ll enjoy increased comfort, have less laundry to do and save money on pajamas. It’s a win-win for your health and your household.
How to sleep naked tonight
Curious to try it for yourself? Simply drop the robe and start getting the rest you deserve. “While sleeping naked is not a cure-all, it’s a low-risk habit that, for many women, supports better sleep, skin health and overall comfort in a surprisingly simple way,” says Harris.
For people who are not comfortable sleeping this way, consider trying silk pajamas. Many women, especially during menopause, find it to be the most cooling fabric. “What’s most important is that you are comfortable with however you sleep,” Harris says. Tonight could be the beginning of your best sleep yet!
