Maple Leaf Extracts Might Unlock the Secrets to Wrinkle-Free Skin, Research Suggests

Maple trees are well known for providing delicious syrup, but you may soon start hearing about a lesser-known product: maple leaf extract. According to recent research, maple leaf extract may help smoothen skin to prevent wrinkles. We never thought we’d say it, but this sounds even better than the syrup drizzled on fluffy pancakes.

The new research, presented at the 256th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society on August 20, 2018 in Boston, reports that the beauty of maple leaves might be skin deep — literally. Researchers from the University of Rhode Island looked closely at compounds in the leaves and examined their ability to prevent elastase activity (which is part of the aging process that causes wrinkles) in a test tube. As it turns out, the compounds not only interfere with the process of wrinkling, researchers said their prior work also showed that the compounds may be able to protect the skin from other unwanted changes, such as inflammation and age spots.

“You could imagine that these extracts might tighten up human skin like a plant-based Botox, though they would be a topical application, not an injected toxin,” said the study’s principal investigator, Navindra P. Seeram, PhD, in a press release.

Now, as you can probably guess, these hypothetical maple leaf extract products aren’t in stores just yet (otherwise, we’re sure they’d be flying off the shelves). However, the researchers have started taking the necessary steps to get these valuable extracts into sin-care products. Not only have they developed their own formulation, they’ve also licensed it to the botanical extracts supplier Verdure Sciences. The researchers are hoping to find a market for the special formula in cosmetics, or perhaps even in dietary supplements.

Along with the possibility of warding off wrinkles, researchers added that these hypothetical products would include the added bonus of natural ingredients — a great perk for anyone looking to get away from the more artificial stuff.

We think we speak for a lot of women when we say that we hope to see these potential products in stores soon. In the meantime, keep your eyes open and be on the lookout!
