At the start of a new year, we put so much thought into what goals we want to achieve in the year to come or what changes we want to make. And while many new year resolutions are often about health, wellness and lifestyle tweaks, making some beauty resolutions can be a good idea too. Now is the perfect time to take stock of things you’re doing in your beauty routine—maybe you’ve applied eyeliner the same way to years—especially, since techniques we used in our 30s and 40s might not work well for mature skin. Here, the easy beauty new year’s resolutions that are sure to boost your appearance, confidence, mood and more.

Beauty resolution: Trade brow pencil for brow gel

Brow pencils used to be the go-to for filling in brows, but the pigment and applicator can create a harsh and overdrawn finish. Enter: tinted brow gels, such as Kosas Air Brow Tinted Clean Volumizing Eyebrow Gel. The gel is easy to sweep onto brows to fill in spots and add color that won’t look overdone. To fluff up thin brows, brush the gel onto brows in the opposite direction hair grows, then do another pass in the direction it grows; this “backcombs” brow hairs to help them appear fuller.

Beauty resolution: Swap wipes for double cleansing

While makeup wipes are handy to clean the face at nighttime, they can still leave behind some traces of product and dry out skin. Instead, try double-cleansing skin. First, apply a balm cleanser, such as Hero Cosmetics Dissolve Away Daily Cleansing Balm, which contains moisturizing oils that break down makeup. Second, use a gentle, hydrating cleanser, such as CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, to remove any leftover makeup the first cleanse didn’t get. This ensures skin is adequately clean and stays hydrated at the same time.

Beauty resolution: Properly blend foundation to conceal flaws

To nix the dreaded demarcation line that can show up when applying foundation, the key is to blend the color into your skin properly. After you’ve applied the makeup to your face, makeup artists recommend taking leftover foundation on a sponge or brush and blending down the neck and onto ears to blur any lines. Also smart: When selecting a foundation shade, apply the sample along the jawline and blend onto the neck, then choose the color that blends in best. This will help prevent a harsh line from the get-go.

Beauty resolution: Ditch the heavy eyeliner in favor of “tightlining”

While thick, black eyeliner was trendy way back when, it can make eyes look smaller, tired and even emphasize crow’s-feet. The better option? Try “tightlining.” For this technique, you apply liner along the upper waterline by gently pulling up the lid and applying a thin line of liner just below the lashes. It opens up the eyes, so they pop and makes lashes appear thicker.

Bonus: Ways to boost your beauty sleep

Getting more shuteye is a common New Year resolution, so why not beautify your skin and hair while you snooze?! These genius products ensure you fall (and stay) asleep and leave you looking gorgeous when you wake up. Find the one that’s right for you.

Hydrate skin and fall asleep faster

Before going to bed, rub a skin-nourishing, lavender-scented lotion, such as Dr Teal’s Soothing Lavender Body Lotion, on your hands, arms, and legs to help you relax.  Research shows that using lavender oil for aromatherapy can improve sleep quality even in people with insomnia, depression, and anxiety.

Sleep soundly and minimize puffy eyes

Wearing a weighted eye mask, such as the Nodpod Gentle Pressure Sleep Mask, applies gentle pressure to the eyes to enhance relaxation and end sleep-disrupting stress while also preventing fluids from pooling under the eyes and causing puffiness.

Keep cool while sleeping and banish frizz

Swapping a regular pillowcase for a satin one, such as Kitsch Satin Pillowcase, feels cool-to-the-touch and prevents friction between hair and the material to tame frizz and flyaways.
