The novel, the first in Ross’s Letters of Enchantment series, was initially published in 2023 by Wednesday Books and is considered the author’s most well-known project. What to know about Netflix’s ‘Divine Rivals’
On Tuesday, June 3, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Netflix would be turning Ross’s 2023 novel into a movie. They also shared that Sofia Alvarez, who wrote the script for Netflix’s 2018 film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, would be crafting this one as well. Producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Pouya Shahbazian, the former of whom will join her worked on the blockbuster hit Divergent back in 2014.
“This has been such a hard secret to keep (I’ve been sitting on this news since last August!) but I can now say…Divine Rivals is being adapted for film with Paramount Pictures!” Ross wrote on Instagram following the announcement. “I could not be more thrilled, and I’m honored that Sofia Alvarez will be writing the script. A huge thank you to my producers—Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Pouya Shahbazian—for, first of all, loving the book and Iris & Roman’s story, and for seeing a vision of what it could become on the screen.”

“I’m honored to have such an incredible team for this project, and I’m also very excited to come on board as executive producer.”
Divine Rivals will be the first of Ross’s novels to be adapted, and as of publication, it is unclear if the second book in the series, Ruthless Vows, will be turned into a film as well.
What is ‘Divine Rivals’ about?
Divine Rivals is a young adult romance novel that has spent over 100 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and has over 100,000 reviews on Goodreads.
The plot follows Iris Winnow, whose life is falling apart. To help cope, she finds solace in writing letters to her brother, who is away at war. But when the letters magically vanish and wind up in the hands of Roman Kitt, her handsome newspaper rival, the duo form a connection that changes their world.
“If I could tell you anything about this story today, it’s this: it found me when I needed it most. I began writing Divine Rivals at the end of 2020, after going through nearly a year of writer’s block and feeling completely empty of words and the desire to write. But as soon as I found Iris and Roman, I knew all those months of waiting had been worth it,” Ross wrote on her Instagram back in April 2023. “This is my 7th book, which is hard to believe! And I’m incredibly thankful for the people who have loved & supported me along the way.”

“I wrote this book for me, but I also wrote it for you. And I hope it feels like home to you.”
The author has since released the sequel, Ruthless Vows, and will also be releasing a prequel, entitled Wild Reverence, in September of this year. That novel will be the first time Ross has written an adult fantasy story in the Letters of Enchantment world.
When will the ‘Divine Rivals’ movie be released?
Currently, there is no news on when Paramount Pictures will be releasing the Divine Rivals movie. There are also no casting updates.
