Shield of Sparrows follows Princess Odessa, who is forced to marry Prince Zavier from the neighboring kingdom to fulfill an ancient treaty. But before their nuptials, Odessa’s father tasks her with a secret mission: spy on Zavier and his family. According to Odessa’s father, Zavier’s family holds the key to defeating the monstrous dragon-like creatures called Crux, which could be key in his quest for power. But will Odessa betray her soon-to-be husband for her father? Only time will tell.

“There’s a lot of me in this book. A lot of special characters and names and elements that I have been saving for years for just the right story,” author Devney Perry wrote on Instagram in February 2025. “It’s the longest book I’ve ever written and absolutely my favorite.”

Currently, there are two books in the series: Shield of Sparrows and Rites of the Starling, the latter of which was released in April 2026. Before the release, there was a lot of talk about the special edition Rites of the Starling book, which Perry said was “an absolute dream.”

“There will be a limited first print run with stunning sprayed edges. But just like with Shield of Sparrows, when they’re gone, they’re gone,” she continued.

The special editions are available wherever books are sold, so if you want one, act fast before they sell out.

Before the Shield of Sparrows series, Perry was best known as a romance author. She had published a variety of standalones and series, but none were as popular as her romantasy novels.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect by switching genres, but I’ve been blown away by your love and support,” the author wrote on Instagram earlier this year. “THANK YOU! I am beyond grateful for you all! Happy reading.”

Given the ending of Rites of the Starling—no spoilers—it shouldn’t come as a shock that there will be a third Shield of Sparrows book. It releases on March 9th, 2027, but as of publication, it does not have a name.

“This date marks my 10-year publishing anniversary, and when Red Tower tossed it out as a potential release date, I said YES! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 10 years of books than with the conclusion of this trilogy and Odessa’s story,” Perry wrote on Instagram. “As always, lock in those preorders to ensure you get the Deluxe Edition. When they’re gone, they’re gone. We’ll be revealing the title, cover, edges, blurb, etc., soon. Stay tuned!”

‘Shield of Sparrows’ movie adaptation news

After the first book’s release, Amazon MGM Studios announced it is adapting Shield of Sparrows into a movie. Derek Kolstad, best known for his work on the John Wick film series, is writing the screenplay. It doesn’t have a cast or release date, but fans are eagerly awaiting an update.
