Dragon riders, it’s time to fly! What we know about ‘Threshing Day’ by Rebecca Yarros
For months, Yarros has been teasing a new Fourth Wing book. She even posted on Instagram in April to let fans know that she “had little idea about a year ago to drop a surprise for you guys. But then you not only found it as soon as my publisher put it on preorder, but shot it straight to number one on Amazon without a cover, title, or even a vague idea of what might be coming your way!?!? You’ve rendered me speechless.”
Following that, fans began to wonder what it was going to be about. Some thought it was going to be a full copy of Major Afendra’s Guide to the Riders Quadrant (Unauthorized Edition), which is heavily quoted at the beginning of several chapters in the series. There was also a rumor it would be some sort of prequel or reveal what happened during Violet’s missing moments in Book 3, Onyx Storm.
One thing readers knew it wasn’t? A cookbook!
“I heard this rumor that it was a cookbook. It’s not a cookbook,” Yarros said at her ApollyCon panel earlier this year. “Aside from chocolate cake, food isn’t really that big of a part of the Empyrean World.”

Since then, details of this book were a bit of a mystery. Until now. Earlier today, Yarros took to Instagram to announce the name and the plot of this mysterious new Fourth Wing book. The post came after Yarros posted on Facebook yesterday, letting her fans know something Fourth Wing-related was going to happen today, which just so happens to be Conscription Day in the books—the day when the new Basgiath War College students enter the school.
“Welcome to Conscription Day, Cadets! I’m thrilled to share the title and cover of my next book (not book four!) in the Empyrean series: Threshing Day [which is the day students get their dragons],” Yarros wrote in the announcement. “This collection contains thirteen threshing stories about some of your favorite characters and their dragons.”
“And as a Threshing Day gift, Xaden’s story is included in the collection and as usual, will be up on my website,” she continued. “I hope this gives you a fun trip back to Basgiath while I’m writing book four!”
When will ‘Threshing Day’ by Rebecca Yarros be released?
Threshing Day by Rebecca Yarros will be released on Tuesday, September 29. It’s available for preorder now, and she’s offering a “deluxe first edition that has sixteen beautiful original pieces of full-color art.”
Is ‘Threshing Day’ by Rebecca Yarros book 4 in the ‘Fourth Wing’ series?

As Yarros said above, Threshing Day will not be book four in the series. It’s more of a fun companion novel. The author has also made it very clear that this book “hasn’t altered book 4’s timeline in the least,” meaning that you can choose not to read it if you don’t want to.
