Despite the fact that the fourth book in the Fourth Wing series doesn’t have a title, plot or release date yet, fans are already speculating what the fifth book will be about. That’s right. Romantasy (romantic fantasy) readers are banging on the door of the Basgiath War College in the hopes of catching a glimpse of everyone’s favorite star-crossed lovers Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson—and Rebecca Yarros feels the same way. Over the years the bestselling author has teased Fourth Wing book 5, and trust us when we say it sounds like it’s going to be almost as magical as the dragons themselves. Read on for more.
What we know so far about ‘Fourth Wing’ book 5
When Yarros first planned out the Fourth Wing series, she said it was only supposed to have three books. But when she started writing Iron Flame, the second book in the series, that all changed.
“Probably about 30,000 words in, I called my editor and I said, ‘I think this is a five-book series,’ and that’s how we went from three to five,” the author told Variety in November 2023. “I’m a really thorough plotter and I plot every single chapter, every single scene and how each romantic arc and action arc moves and how each of the Easter eggs are put in. It comes to me as I’m staring at the plot board and looking at what is key.”
Then, in January 2025, Yarros teased the fifth book again, telling Today, “How they start, how they end, how book 5 starts, how the series ends—that’s all plotted out and done.”

“I keep an extensive bible that tells you who the character is, who their dragon is, what their signet is, what has happened to them, what their body looks like, where their scars are, everything like that,” Yarros continued. “I keep it all meticulously, jot it down so that my editors don’t, you know, come after me with spatulas.”
Following that interview, Yarros remained tight-lipped about the fifth book, but during her recent ApollyCon panel, the author teased book 5 and gave readers a much-needed update on book 4.
“It’s going to be on the heavier side, because I had to plot points between 4 and 5 to make sure that I can end in a five-book series. So I want to make sure everything is working correctly there,” Yarros said. “She’s gonna be on the curvier side.”
‘Fourth Wing’ book 5 title and release date
Currently, Fourth Wing book 5 doesn’t have a release date. It also doesn’t have a title, but according to Yarros that’s intentional.

“The titles always come to me when I’m plotting. I’m a really thorough plotter and I plot every single chapter and every single scene and how each romantic arc moves and each action arc moves and how each of the Easter eggs are put in,” she told Variety. “It comes to me as I’m staring at the plot board and looking at what is key. It just pops in. So until I’m at that stage, I don’t know yet. I do have the overall books plotted, though.”
